Without adding fuel to the fire the standard of the match referred to was absolutely shocking for a grand slam
Which was the whole point of the discussion that I read for sure, with there being nothing that was actually disrespectful to Heather. I can't imagine Heather would have been happy with that first set either, and she will certainly be looking for an improved performance from herself today to have any chance against Kontaveit.
The sensible thing would probably be to let this drop () but when I write that Hev's barely hit through a single forehand, for someone to suggest this has anything whatsoever to do with the fact she is not blonde and blue-eyed is really offensive and has to be answered. Nothing could be further from the truth - and did you SEE those forehands???
I also found Jajon's comments witty and in good spirit. I thought it gave a very good 'feel' of the awful stomach knot you often get watching Heather's matches, and the fact you have to laugh or you'd cry.
I didn't agree with the person who said she should give up singles. But it's been said many times this year about Naomi. And indeed Emily W-S. It's a 'reasonable' comment, insofar as it goes, about any player who is over 25, say, and a fair way off their best in singles. (Didn't agree about Naomi either, or even EWS, for what it's worth)
No one disputes that racial abuse is rife, both in tennis and in life. (As is gender abuse and many other types). It's dreadful.
But that wasn't what was happening here.
Just watching Heather, one comment from me is that the actual court surface looks horrible. I am sure I have not seen such pronounced lines where the mower has cut before. Presumably not impacting play, just visual, but they really dont look as attractive as usual.
And surface at the baseline has browned v quickly, again doesnt seem to affect the bounce but it seems to have roughed up much more quickly than usual?

Hev certainly started off today a lot more positively- I think she's been reading this forum :)
Yes, I'm sure you're right CD, she's wanting to impress!
It's Kontaveit who's the nervy one today mixing some good looking shorts with others that are woefully mi****. Heather needs to keep Kontaveit unsettled if she can, as her best chance in this match.
It's mis hits, idiot censor

Missed the first three games due to traffic holdups. This is a very different Hev from Monday's version. She pushed Kontaveit all the way, but a couple of errors in the last game togerher with some big hitting from Kontaveit made the difference.
The stripes on the court don't look too bad from where I am sitting, but the service areas are browner than usual for the first week.
Yes, the brown is owing to the lack of rain. I don't know if they water at all, but without rain that baseline area will continue to get drier and barer.
Positive start but it's falling away now. Kontaveit really stepping it up and Hev's head has totally dropped and she's being rushed into error after error.
Shame she didn't eek out a hold for 4-2* and put more pressure on.
Kim clijsters and Sam Smith (isn't it?) have been quite lucid about hev s issues re not hitting the ball properly in match situations, or not differentiating between different balls in terms of which ones to go for.
Yes, there were chances on that first set.......she started well.....
