Emily is also top seed here in the doubles this week, after her W25 doubles win last week. She's playing with Gabriella Da Silva Fick (AUS) and first up will play against Chloe + Michaela Bayerlova (CZE).
I'm assuming Emily's priority in dropping down a level this week is to get at least 1 win so she has 1/3 counters she needs by mid Aug to retain her ranking (by which time the W15 counters will be included).
Emily has a tight first set but then cruises, although she was broken serving for the match. One counter down, just needs another two now. Chloe gets games against the WR 632. I suppose that's progress.
Top seed next for Emily
R32: Emily ARBUTHNOTT (GBR) 789 beat Sai Samhitha CHAMARTHI (IND) 814/949 (CH:773) 7-6(4) 6-1
R32: Chloe COMPSON (GBR) 856 lost to Marina YUDANOV (SWE) [8] 632/89 (CH:570) 2-6 3-6
R16: Emily ARBUTHNOTT (GBR) 789 vs Nika KUKHARCHUK (RUS) [1] 487 (CH:371 Aug 18)
Good to see Emily competing and getting points towards keeping her ranking. I believe she has another year to go at college.
And Chloe finds the scoresheet - which is quite an improvement. We tend to forget that Chloe is still a junior though, turned 17 in February, so some allowance must be made (despite the WC situation discussed at length elsewhere).
Emily will lose her WTA ranking whilst she competes at the World University Games over the coming 2 weeks ( 2 of her 4 counters are due off on 15/07 and another on 22/07 ) but at least as mentioned this and any new WTA scale 15K points that she collects ( she held none before this week ) will count come August, maybe indeed influencing her decision to compete here.
After her great singles win over the top seed, Emily had perhaps a surprisingly tough battle in her doubles this pm, when she herself was the top seed. Even more so given that her Dutch opponents were only 15 and 19 years of age, but come through she has eventually done in a 1hr 50 mins match. Emily's own partner is only 18.
Emily's next opponents only have a combined age 1yr older than their opponents today.
For a while here, I though Emily was on a mission to make Chloe look good... but thankfully she's returned to her own brief in the second set. Score so far 2-6 6-4
Not really unexpected. There's a difference in ranking that's not for nothing. And unless anyone knows different we've no idea if beating the top seed was because Emily was on super form or the top seed is having a 'mare.
Well at least she is getting tournament practice ahead of the World University games next week !
I did expect her singles results to be better than this, but it is a clay court tournament, and I assume all of her matches at Stanford are hardcourt, so bound to be a bit of a difference.
