Wonderful, a third win today so far for GB women! She plays Ons Jabeur next, beneficiary of Ash Barty having dropped out. Jo won't mind too much either.
As far as points are concerned, this is where Jo reached last year, so she needs one more win to pick up any additional points.
R32: Johanna KONTA (GBR) [14] 18 beat Maria SAKKARI (GRE) 33 (CH:29 Sept 18) 6-4 7-6(4)
R16: Johanna KONTA (GBR) [14] 18 vs Ons JABEUR (TUN) 62 (CH:54 Feb 19)
Yes, I noticed that, and she hadn't been in great form since reaching the Stuttgart final. She lost 5 of her 6 matches coming into the Harriet match (beating Barthel) and that's not a great result for her today. She's obviously high up in the rankings, but I often think her relationship with Sears is on a knife edge.
Hmmm, perhaps so. Players have split with their coaches for less - players have also not split with their coaches for more, either (looking at you, Garbine!)
I mean on paper it's good, she's in the top 20, but it's amazing how draws often up up for her due to retirements / walkovers. Wang Qiang was on a tear last year in Asia and reached the Wuhan semi final, but was physically done by the semi final and retired in their match. Andreescu after her IW exploits (in hindsight) shouldn't have played Miami, but she did and retired in their match meaning Anett reached the QF, and then Osaka gave her a full walkover to the Stuttgart final. Draws do open up all the time, but that's 3 fairly lucky breaks and those are significant extra points gained in huge tournaments, she might have won all 3 anyway, but that is a pretty fortunate streak, and she will probably know that. I do like her, and I do also like listening to Sears' OCC, so hope it works out, but I do just have a sneaky feeling.
I'm sure Sumyk must know something personal about Muguruza, ha.
I hadn't noticed that pattern, how interesting. Andreescu - yes, I wonder how much that IW title win will cost her.
Yeah I cant really work out what's up here except Jo seems hesitant to be aggressive. Ons is quite a nifty grass courter but this match up really shouldn't be a problem for Jo. Lets hope she can turn it around
I wouldn't have thought so, especially at Eastbourne, with Cornet/Zhang to come for a place in the semi final. Hopefully a way back in here, but Jabeur's level does need to drop.
Pretty concerning though heading into Wimbledon, and will dampen expectations a bit. 5 points in a row to save 3 BPs and hold, 9 games of the last 10. Ons does have a it of grass pedigree as you pointed out earlier, but who would have saw this coming at *3-2 first set.
