Week 25 - Wimbledon Womens Wild Card Playoffs

Yes, I was a bit.

Certainly wouldn't have at all supported her getting another straight Q WC ( some of us had voiced our concern about that being any possibility ) but I thought she might get a play-off WC after her decent looking appearance this week.

Last years women's for comparison:

Tara Moore [1] 395 v Eden Silva 525
Ella Taylor 840 v Emily Appleton 616
Emily Webley-Smith 524 v Victoria Allen UNR (WC)
Alicia Barnett 614 v Samantha Murray [3] 504

Sarah Beth Grey [2] 502 v Millie Bissett UNR WC
Erin Richardson UNR WC v Freya Christie 588
Katherine Barnes UNR WC v Danielle Daley UNR WC
Eden Richardson UNR WC v Jodie Burrage [4] 514

I know Eden R is a decent player and won a couple of grass ITF Q matches, but it's quite surprising to see Jodie losing to her a year ago to where she is (or was cry) now. Tara's ranking has gone back over, despite that Sunderland run and coming through Nottm quals. Naomi has obviously went straight from MDWC to this, bypassing the QWC scene. Eden has knocked off about 100 places, Emily is about the same, especially when you consider the W15s will be added soon. SBG will be kind of similar, and being honest, not really going anywhere in singles. EWS will be similarly ranked I think. Vic has made decent progress in the year, but has perhaps stalled a bit since Sunderland, as many were expecting her to get a QWC at one stage. Freya's has had personal issues, but hasn't had much success in the 12 months. Alicia has improved her ranking, but a lot of that was due to the Canadian W25 and the British events later in the year, so she will have a fair few points to defend in the coming months. Sam would have been fairly similar a few weeks ago, but Manchester has been brilliant for her and will massively help with her scheduling going forward. We haven't heard too much on the pro side of things from the 5 WCs outside of Vic in the past year.

Full draw for Round 1

Naomi Broady [1/350] v Sasha Hill [WC]
Amelia Rajecki [WC] v Emily Appleton
Victoria Allen v Alice Gillan
Matilda Mutavdzic [WC] v Eden Silva [3/435]

Samantha Murray [2/359] v Sonay Kartal [WC]
Emily Webley-Smith v Freya Christie
Destinee Martins [WC] v Beth Grey
Alicia Barnett v Tara Moore [4/466]

Do only 4 of them have WTA rankings?

No, at least 7 others do, that's just reflecting the ranking of the 4 seeds.

On form, the lower half looks the tougher, I would have to go for Naomi making it through in the top and Sam v Tara at the bottom, possibly Sam to win - cant see many upsets here

yet the rankings of the top 4 this season in this event are much better than last years top 4, so maybe overall an improvement relative to where we where?

I was thinking Alice had a very low ranking for some reason, but see she must have been one of those victims of the changes at the start of the year.

Or the committee have been stingy and only given 3 GB MDWCs as opposed to 6 last year, and the knock on effects of that have seen the likes of Sam and Naomi in here when they could have been in the QWCs with one or two boosts.

With Mandy, Ella, Emily Arb and Chloe not there from our WTA ranked players Alice appears to be a direct ITF rankings entrant.

So, with Matilda a junior ranking WC, is Amelia the only British tour WC or were one of the other 3 WCs ( Sasha, Sonay and Destinee ) somewhere on the tour list?

-- Edited by indiana on Wednesday 19th of June 2019 06:49:05 PM

Yes, I still don't understand this (where is a Red Squirrel when you need one? smile)

From the list, Amelia was top and gets her wildcard from being top of the British Tour leaderboard.

Alice was second but wouldn't need one as she'd get in on ranking, yes? (She's not listed as a wildcard, so I assume that must be right)

So, according to the rules:  If not required by the player in 1st or 2nd position on the leader board this will be offered to the 3rd placed player only.

which would be Kat Barnes - are we to assume that Kat turned it down????

It doesn't really make much sense, unless she has already gone back to the States or something. She's already played on grass, put in a pretty good showing, received a full QWC last year (even if undeserved). I guess the 5 WCs are fairly decent prospects, and arguably look collectively better than the crop last year, but I'm sure they could have fit her in somewhere.

Yes Sonay Kartal is new to me. I'd have expected someone who has been involved on the grass like Holly F instead. And surprised we haven't seen Eden at all this year on the grass.

Seen Sonay well spoken about in places. CD? But I don't really know anything myself.

Yes, I'm a big fan of Sonay's. She is one of those players who's had a lot of injuries (not sure if serious or just a run of minor ones) and so never really seemed to have had a proper junior 'run', so to speak.

Partly because of this, I always thought she was very underranked.

Even now - compared to her contempories - she's barely played any tournaments. She's only got seven on her whole list - Marni Banks (who I also like) has 21 !!!!  So, I think for someone to have her ranking on only seven tournaments is amazing.

She is, however, rather short for a tennis player - haven't seen her for a while but, from photos, I don't think she's grown much. It's not a deal killer but it doesn't help. In fact, she doesn't really look much like your 'classic' GB tennis player at all, which I also rather like And has some slightly 'original' shots...

So I wish her well.

Although still want to know what Kat Barnes isn't there....

NB The player I expected to see somewhere around (not necessarily here) was Myah Petchey. She's just become British - is ranked top 200 junior - and has 'connections' (said in a nice way).
I thought she'd pop up somewhere.....

See scores, see scores ...

Gawd, next thing someone will be suggesting that it would be a good idea for the public to be able to view these players pursuing their dreams - even actually be in attendance!

Err, I don't know re any link for scores.
