Week 25 - ITF (W100) - Ilkley, Great Britain - Grass

Compared to the other matches I watched , this one (the bits I saw) was like watching paint dry.

I only saw a couple of points of this game as I was watching the Paul Jubb match but once again I was a bit concerned to see Gabi berating herself again because in her case it seems counterproductive. Some players, like Dan Evans, actually seem to get themselves annoyed to spur themselves on but in Gabi's case it seems to work against her and can encourage her opponent too.

It's also a shame so many of our women players are struggling to get enough matches under their belts injury free. Especially at this time of yesr when you'd like to see them at their peak given the advantages of the crowd behind them and the possibility of wildcards. Hopefully Gabi will have better fortune in Wimblly quailies.

I don't know who is coaching Gabi now, but I wish whoever it was would remind her that at her peak progress period early last year what was remarkable about her play was her calm efficiency and patent lack of histrionics. Each time you see her do it now one thinks, 'oh, she's wasting her energy and losing her focus again, that's another one down the tubes'.

And that's the difference with Dan. He doesn't lose focus when berating himself, in fact it seems to help him refocus at times, but with Gabi, she does lose focus. Once she starts the berating her error count tends to rise further.

Gabi isn't the only one who does this, weren't people saying the same thing about Jodie? And do they have anything in common...?

Agree with Michael though. What's the coach(es) saying / doing about it?

I think Jodie has always been pretty volatile and I am not as sure it is quite as counterproductive for her ( though I think she should calm it a bit too ). Gabi has changed.

Better late than never
Doubles First Round

Naiktha BAINS (GBR) / Maia LUMSDEN (GBR) (WC) CR884 (177+707) v Beatriz HADDAD MAIA (BRA) / Luisa STEFANI (BRA) CR462 (349+113)

Olivia NICHOLLS (GBR) / Katie SWAN (GBR) (WC) CR833 (311+522) LOST TO Asia MUHAMMAD (USA) / Maria SANCHEZ (USA) [2] CR99 (39+60) 6-2 4-6 8-10 cry

Lots of close games, although they seemed to be on the defensive for most of the second set and the MTB.

Look as if they could make a good pair with a bit more match pracice though.

Lovely setting is Ilkley, I'm hoping to go back there next year. Bit of a surprise that Maia has been scheduled on that court with no dedicated seating, especially when there's another match that has just started on the main women's showcourt where Gabi and Katie (and Alicia) were all on - don't really understand that.

I suppose Maia is actually the only Brit in contention of boosting her QWC, certainly if she wins it, but maybe even if she gets to the SF and gets a notable scalp, although I don't even think she has won a set on grass, so that's pretty unlikely. Hopefully she can get a win here though.

First break to Flink who now leads Maia 2-1, helped by a couple of double faults

And its maias erratic serving that lets flink break again to take the fist set 6-3
