Week 25 - ITF (W100) - Ilkley, Great Britain - Grass

Yes, as you say, 56 mins for a grass court match is not expeditive, whatever the score.

Young Holly has started quite nicely, leading 2-1*

Lovely to see her back on court....

Holly had three BPs there, well deserved, but three goof first serves put pay to those.

She's doing some nice work with her backhand, has a good contact point and whips through it.

Well, net net, I'm still pretty happy with my little fave flutter on Holly a couple of years back.

She's just lost the first set 6-4

Which was a fair score.

And, as last year, she's a bit flat footed, and doesn't get going very fast.

But she's got some excellent ground shots, accelerates well, and makes decent choices.

Just hope the body holds together.....

It looks like it's slipping away. Holly is down 1-4* in the second set. I'm still seeing some of that promise from a few years back. Di Giuseppe has surprised me with how well she served while facing break points.

Yes, Holly lost the second set 2-6

Start was close and, as you say, slipped away a bit.

The drop shots killed her (you can see she's never going to get them). And the Italian certainly served well when she needed to.

But a decent showing.

Lissey was 5-2 up in first set, and had a set point at 5-4 but just been pegged back to 5-5 cry

WCs to Maia, Katie S and Gabi. Katie draws 2nd seed Parmentier, the winner will play the winner of Gabi and Smitkova. Maia draws Flink

In doubles, the WCs go to Maia and Naiktha, and Katie and Olivia

Surely they could have scraped a 4th WC from somewhere? I saw that Ann Li was replaced in quals by an alt so that someone must have withdrawn, but didn't realise it was because only 3 WCs were used. Surely one of Vic, Sam or Naomi could have filled it, assuming there's no injury there, as they all can't be in the WC playoff? Disappointing.

Tough draws all those, but then the field is strong. Katie, who as our highest ranked player could have been best expected to go through has the toughest of them all.

R32: Maia LUMSDEN (GBR) [WC] 266 vs Varvara FLINK (RUS) 140=CH
R32: Gabriella TAYLOR (GBR) [WC] 339 vs Tereza SMITKOVA (CZE) 124 (CH:57 April 15)
R32: Katie SWAN (GBR) [WC] 211 vs Pauline PARMENTIER (FRA) [2] 81 (CH:40 July 08)

After her run last week Sam especially could have been given some reward...

Thought Lissey might play with Olivia again, but guess Lissey does want to be free for the end of the week.

If nothing else boost Alicia from a QWC to MDWC. Unless they had identified 4 and one pulled out very late and no time for a replacement and thus, Li was boosted instead. Would be very disappointing if they simply just went for 3.

Sam definitely should have been in the contention - perhaps that means she is in the WC playoff?

Yes, you may well be right. Someone certainly pulled out after the q draw was made with Li being boosted
