RE: Week 25 - ITF (W100) - Ilkley, Great Britain - Grass

I'm more inclined to think Victoria Allen rather than Naomi. Vic is more likely to receive a QWC for Wimbledon than Naomi, who may need to go through the play-offs. I note that Vic has withdrawn from the Nottingham junior event next week.

I wonder if Holly Fischer's inclusion here means we should be thinking about her for a Wimbledon QWC again this year?

I guess it will mainly come down to the QWCs and playoffs and the draw tomorrow will obviously give us much more of an indication as to who will have QWCs and who will be in the playoffs. I'm not as sure Vic will be as much of a given as a few weeks ago, particularly with Fran's resurgence, although they do obviously favour youth so perhaps Fran, Emma (unless she scraps senior matches altogether this summer), Vic and maybe even Holly F, as RS mentioned, may all be considered / selected for QWCs. Will be very interesting to see the main draw tomorrow.

That's what I was thinking...... (feared......)

Re Holly F, I mean.

Holly was out of her depth and shouldn't have been allowed to step on court last year. Put her in the play offs.

100%, and then some......

And its hardly as though she's done anything else since last summer to change the decision

Crossed my mind too. Well let's see her at least play a match here. And it's not even as if her junior results were that great when she played for a couple of months or so earlier this year.

Unless she produces something absolutely spectacular here then a discretionary WC to the Wimbledon WC play-offs will be more than enough. And that may be arguably kind compared to other candidates but maybe at least much more understandable. A straight Q WC would surely simply be a wasted straight Q WC as it proved last year.

All the best to her, and I realise she is a big ( want to keep ) British hope who has had a lot of injury issues. And I have seen or heard nothing from her end re any sense of entitlement.

But just surely no to any Wimbledon Q WC.

Going back to what I said earlier, En Shuo Liang played on Thursday and Friday in Tajikistan:

She beat this player 7-6 7-5 on Thursday - www.wtatennis.com/players/player/317800/title/Marian-Jade-Capadocia
www.fedcup.com/en/draws-results/tie.aspx

And this player (without a WTA page) 6-4 6-2 on Friday - www.itftennis.com/procircuit/players/player/profile.aspx
www.fedcup.com/en/draws-results/tie.aspx

So that's a pretty tight turnaround in a far away location, and not exactly convincing scorelines against very modest opposition, especially the 7-6 7-5, so maybe there's half a chance for an upset with Holly S, or a similarly close contest.

Holly Fischer is still so young, yet has already been hindered by so many injuries. 2016 seems to be her most recent injury free year. I remember watching her on the live stream at the Auray U12 tournament, and she showed so much promise. If she can remain injury free, surely she's got a lot of potential. That being said, there are still so many question marks surrounding her fitness, and a Wimbledon QWC would be unjustified at this point.

That's good. Hopefully Gabi will be the 3rd, and the 4th would then give us a good indication of Wimbledon QWCs and playoffs.

Look like you can stream a couple of these qualifiers. Amelia and Kostyuk's matches are showing so far. In terms of odds, all 3 youngsters are understandably big outsiders, but Lissey is reasonably close:

Holly S - 6/1 vs 1/12
Holly F - 19/2 vs 1/40
Amelia - 12/1 vs 1/80
Lissey - 13/8 vs 4/9

I'm actually quite surprised Lissey is so short to be honest. Jodie has beaten the Greek girl twice this year, but she has operated at a much higher level and beat Hev the other week, perhaps she's just very poor on grass, but then Lissey has pretty much only beaten MDWCs in 2019.

Holly F's opponent has only won one match outside of clay since March 2015 (earlier this year) and by my reckoning, this will be her first ever pro match on the grass in her career and she's 28. This is the first time her ranking has allowed her to play Wimbledon quallies, so a reason for her to try these tournaments.

Obviously whoever the young'uns were up against, it was always going to be difficult, but relatively speaking, the 2 Holly's have probably got the best opponents they could have had under the circumstances, and while the main aim is simply to give them a bit more experience in these big tournaments with the future in mind, hopefully they can keep the scorelines fairly respectable.

Well, that was rather brief....

QR1: Amelia RAJECKI (GBR) [WC] UNR Born 2002 (JCH:1124) lost to Katarina ZAVATSKA (UKR) [q10] 189 (CH:171) 1-6 0-6

Felt a bit sorry for her in that first set, 4 of Zavatska's 6 winning games went to deuce, and Amelia had game points in 2 of them, so could have looked a bit different. Likewise the first 2 games of the second set, 3 BPs in the opening game and 5 deuces on her first service game and a game point, but then it ran away from her.

Probably clutching at straws a bit, but at least it wasn't constant holds or breaks to love or 15, and Zavatska is a young, improving talent, but it the score obviously doesn't look great.
