Week 25 - ATP 500 - Fever-Tree Championships - The Queen's Club, London, Great Britain (grass) - doubles

The entry list.  The draw includes Jamie & Neal, Joe & Rajeev & Andy & "Deliciano".  Flamingowings reports on the singles thread that wild cards have been awarded to Bambo & Jonny O'Mara & to Kyle & Ken.  Not sure whether that means that the latter two will be playing as a pair.  It looks as though Bruno & Mate Pavic will be the top seeds (CR 23 [16+7]).

Kyle & Ken are a pair SC. If they weren't I would've specified partners! ;)

There's a nice little Q&A with Deliciano in today's Metro:

"He's a great guy... this'll be special"

The Spaniard will team up with And Murray to play doubles at next week's Fever-Tree Championships

Doubles with Andy Murray at the Fever-Tree Championships.  How did that come about?

I want to say how happy I am Andy is coming back, pain-free.  It was not nice to see him suffering, but since the second surgery he is without pain and that is most important.  I was speaking to his coach Jamie Delgado and he asked me.  Then we had a wait to see if our ranking was high enough.  Andy didn't want a wil card because he didn't want to take it from other British players.  Fortunately, we were the last team to get in!  I am looking forward to it so much.  Andy is a great guy and it will be really special for me to be by his side when he makes his comeback.

What is his doubles like?

He is really good.  Look at some of the results he has had with his brother.  It's funny because since we knew we were playing together, he has been texting me about my results last week in Surbiton.  He is so competitive!  We will need to practise together as much as we can so that we are ready.

And you will be playing singles again, too?

Yes, the tournament has given me a wild card, which is really nice.  Winning a Queen's two years ago was the biggest and most important title of my career.  It meant everything to me.  It is one of the best tournaments on the ATP tour.  Everything and everyone that works there is so nice.  I will always remember it and it is going to be great to play there again.

You're 37.  How much longer do you think you will play for?

I'm not sure.  I thought this might be my last year, but now I am thinking I will play next year.  It is not easy to know when the right time to stop is.  I love playing and I am still fit.  I am tournament director in Madrid, which taught me what it is like behind the scenes.  There are many things to think of - everything gets done for you as a player because all these people are thinking about them for you.

The bit about Andy & the wild cards is a nice touch.  smile

Interesting (after some of the knocks it gets on this forum) to hear him say that Queen's is one of the best tournaments on the ATP tour and everyone who works there is so nice.  One of my sons had very happy experiences working there in his University holidays for a couple of years.

Andy will also be in Eastbourne, if he can find a partner, according to Stu Fraser in today's Times:  "In the meantime, Murray has yet secure a partner for Eastbourne and Wimbledon - López's singles commitments mean that he cannot guarantee his availability - but he hopes to have one in place at the start of next week".

Good to hear that Andy is going for both those events as well. From what was said in the comments by Lopez, he would want to play with a singles player with high enough ranking to get in without impacting on wild cards for other Brits.

Most of the people who work and go to Queens will probably be distracted voting for Boris. Its full of tories essentially. Very elite and selective club its fair to say.

Andy only wanting to play without a Wild Card therefore leaving it for Brits just goes to show you how thoughtful he is. A lot of his peers wouldnt have even had the thought enter their heads. We will miss him when he goes not just for the tennis he has played but for the role model and all round man he is.

QR1:  (qWC) Jack Draper & Cameron Norrie UNR (0+201) vs (q2) Robert Lindstedt & Artem Sitak (SWE/NZL) CR 102 (57+45)

The q1s are Jérémy Chardy & Fabrice Martin, who play Marco Cecchinato & Fernando Verdasco.  Tough draw!

What I dont get is why they introduce doubles qualies at 500 level, makes no logical sense.

Hope cam and jack get the win though, as you say tough draw
