Week 23 - ITF (W100) - Surbiton, Great Britain - Grass

I agree Michael. I noticed she was doing that in matches earlier in the season as well as today. It just gives the opponent the psychological upper hand. Gabi Taylor does it as well. I'd definitely like to see our players also become more aggressive at times in their play, particularly when they have the upper hand.

Having said that she did play well to get herself back into the match a few times, so some promising signs. I hope her ankle's okay.

Because of the rain there are 43 matches to be played tomorrow.
Also of note: not one women's match - not even Heather! - is on the main court which is very poor for a combined event and a "home" one as well. Tomic vs Paul is a curious choice to start play, even with the contingent of Aussies around

Yes, but this is because of the livestreaming, I believe. i.e. all the men's ones are being livestreamed by ATP and so are on the same courts and all the ITF ones likewise, I don't think they can mix them up.

However, net net, I agree, it looks bad to run a joint event and then not have the women ever on the show court.

Add: and I also agree about the comments about Jodie. As mentioned previously, I've seen it very markedly both in Jodie and in Freya, in a very similar manner, which made me question whether there was a JTC connection.....

Maia struggling to win points on her own serve today 52% on first serve, just 35% on second serve.

1-6 and 1-2*

Lost 1-6 3-6. I knew they had a ton of matches to catch up on, but didn't realise they started at 10am today. With Maia and Jodie out, and Naiktha pretty much a set down, I can see the focus of this week quickly turning into hoping a Wimbledon entrant (or Hev I suppose) wins the title, well it'll be on my mind anyway.

Heather (1/2) and Katy (6/5) were the closest at the bookies to win their R1 matches (Jodie was 13/8 FWIW), so there is a chance we could still get 1 or 2 progressing, but the chances of SF and QF like last year look very slim, which obviously isn't a surprise given the field, and injuries. Lapko and Brengle are at least Wimbledon entrants, and Golubic is a set up on Blinkova (but now down a break), so I'm hoping this event can save a Wildcard as Manchester is a lot weaker.

Is it? I suppose that's a reason but still - the optics whatever the reason isn't great.

12 points in a row for Hev - she holds at *4-4, breaks to take the set, then holds in the opening game of the second.

Great finish to the first set from Heather. Three aces in one game, and a break to love to take the first set 6-4. And a hold to love in the second, making it 12 points in a row.

6-4 1-0*

I'm trying to watch this but it's impossible. Dreadful fuzzy picture and then the connection keeps dropping out. Is there an alternative to the ITF site?

Bet365 is similar, it's poor now, and I gave up when Emily A was on the other day as it was even worse.

Serving for the match now *5-1. It's pretty hard to make out the ball on my stream.

That match is going to do wonders for Hev's confidence. Looked in total control, and her body language was very positive (well in the few of games I managed to watch while the stream was working)

Rodina has had an even worse 2019 than Heather - she is now 2-16 since the turn of the year and the last 14 of those defeats have all been in straight sets, but she is normally good on grass with her Wimbledon run last year and has had GB ITF success before, plus she was a seed here.

Heather has now matched her wins (not quite points) on grass last year and as TA says, that should be great for her confidence, unlike last year when she obviously lost to a WC at this stage - those extra few days this year from exiting to RG doubles will likely have helped. Would be great if she can go on a run here - Brengle up next.

Edit - it was 6-4 6-1.

Much better start from Naiktha today, has held serve 3/3. But yesterday's double break means it is 2-6 *1-1
