Week 22 - ITF (W25) - Santa Margarita de Montbui, Spain - Hard

Emily has lost her last 3 service games. Put up a good fight in the first set but has struggled on her serve throughout

4-6 0-1*

One of out two is fair enough given the draws here. Rus next for Sam, so a free hit for her. Rus was given a competitive match today by the WR 442 so Sam shouldn't be overawed.

R32: Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) [Q] 508 lost to Nadia PODOROSKA (ARG) [4] 234 (CH:158 May 17) 4-6 1-6
R32: Samantha MURRAY (GBR) [Q] 540 beat Ilona Georgiana GHIOROAIE (ROU) [IR] 767/25 (CH:384 July 18) 6-3 6-1

R16: Samantha MURRAY (GBR) [Q] 540 vs Arantxa RUS (NED) [1] 130 (CH:61 Aug 12)

I still think Emily should have called it a day after Jerusalem and taken a break. She admitted last week that she had hit the wall after a tough singles match.
This was her 17th singles match of this 4 week trip (11 wins, 6 losses), and she's had 11 doubles matches so far (9 wins, 2 losses plus one walkover). That's a lot of tennis.
Sofia also seems to be struggling now.

Shame as I saw Em was *4-2 up but clearly lacking in some energy

I see Sofia has withdrawn today from qualifying in Poland next week (a W60+H). Emily is still an alt on the Surbiton entry list but doubt she will get a QWC. Wondered though if she and Sofia might get a doubles WC. Imagine Olivia and Beth will get one first though.

Depends whether Liv is fit or not doesn't it. It must have been her that withdrew the other week, as Beth has been playing league tennis in the meantime.

They received a bye into the QF too. So don't think they get any points yet, unless they win their SF match? 18 pts for reaching the SF would not count for Sofia, but it would for Emily.

Em and Sofia may (just) be able to get into Surbiton on their ranking. They have a CR of 427; the last in last year was 440.

Yes if they lose their SF they will get just 1 point. Now that ITF doubles entry uses singles ranking they won't get into the grass events I doubt.

Emily does seem to be playing better this run of events, but unfortunate draws last two weeks have hampered her getting above a few of the girls she will be competing against in pre-qualies. Others, like Sam and Lissey, have benefited from the weak fields.

Yes, big jump in the rankings for both as points go on. Up to CR427 from Monday's showing of CR485.

The livescore for Sam's doubles against the 4th seeds is stuck now at 6-4 4-0 30-40*
Hope that means they are over the line now ... and now indeed showing suddenly as a 6-4 6-0 win. Wonderful

Opponents are now known, so here is the full doubles roundup.

QF:- Elitsa KOSTOVA (BUL) / Samantha MURRAY (GBR) 605 (273+332) def Ulrikke EIKERI (NOR) / Ana Sofia SANCHEZ (MEX) [4] 546 (174+372) 6-4 6-0
QF:- Sofia SHAPATAVA (GEO) / Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) [2] 485 (197+288) def Irene BURILLO ESCORIHUELA (ESP) / Guiomar MARISTANY ZULETA DE REALES (ESP) 860 (467+393) WALKOVER

SF:- Elitsa KOSTOVA (BUL) / Samantha MURRAY (GBR) 605 (273+332) v Nadia PODOROSKA (ARG) / Erin ROUTLIFFE (NZL) [1] 409 (314+95)
SF:- Sofia SHAPATAVA (GEO) / Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) [2] 485 (197+288) v Marina BASSOLS RIBERA (ESP) / Ekaterina YASHINA (RUS) [3] 541 (371+170

The top seeds needed a late break of serve, a tie-break and a MTB to get through.
The third seeds won by 5-0 retired.

18 doubles points will do both Sam and Emily a world of good biggrin

Except Emily won't get 18 points (see above). It'll be 1, 30 or 50
