Week 22 - ITF (W25) - Santa Margarita de Montbui, Spain - Hard

Draw gods not smiling on Emily, very tough one for her.

Sam should win. Naturally a doubles specialist draws Aiche.

A good day for Sam as she picks up her 2nd win in the day, this time with Elitsa Kostova (BUL) in the doubles. They win 6-7(5) 6-3 10-4
They now join EWS and Sofia who have a bye into the QF.

Sam's singles point is a counter. The 9 doubles points replace 1.

Emily's singles point replaces 1 dropping off. The 9 doubles points are not a counter for Emily who needs to win her QF to score but would be a handy non-counter.

Great result for Sam, much easier in the end than I expected 6-3 6-1

Emily should be on court relatively soon.

Very good result for Sam.
Emily will have to wait a bit longer, as Rodionova has just leveled the preceding match via a tie-break.

Yes, and I've just noticed too that Sam's points from last week and so far this week, will not only move her up about 79 places from WR 547 to LR 461, but it will also move her up 5 GB places from GB#20 to #15! And one more win would put her ahead of Lissey and level on points with Fran.

Great to see Sam hitting some good form, and hopefully injury free.

It would be lovely if she had another great grass run

Yes, unfortunately all these points will go on too late for the grass season entries, but hope she does get some QWCs into the W100s.

Em is on court now, unfortunately is broken immediately by the 4th seed

The only issue with the grass events is that the lists look much stronger this year. The Surbiton main draw cut off is currently 134 and although that will go down after automatic RG withdrawals, I can't see it being anything like as low as sub 200 like it was last year, and the Q fields have reduced from 32 to 24 with one less QWC this year, so less opportunities for Brits to play, certainly at Surbiton anyway.

Naomi will be quite fortunate to sneak into Surbiton quals the way it is going, and then who gets the 4 QWCs if it was Naomi downwards? I think there'll be some disappointed players come the weekend and we won't have anything like the 20 that were involved last year. There's no doubt EWS deserves a QWC over Freya on recent form, even if she is almost 15 years older.

I loved Surbiton when it was just a 50k (or whatever). I told the club president and committee but they weren't too fussed about my view :::)))
