Vekic through and Bencic early days in her match with Siegemund, so in this section we have Vekic vs Bencic/Siegemund and Kuzmova vs Konta/Davis, winners facing each other, and one of those six will make the QF.
Jo playing much better this set. I get the feeling she may have tanked the 2nd set after losing her serve. She keeps blowing her nose maybe she has a slight cold/allergies
Wow, thought that was almost blown from 5-0* to 5-3 *0-40, but she did so well to turn that game around, winning on her 4th (I think) MP. Well done Jo.
Kuzmova next, 50/50 I reckon, but more chance than what it could have been (despite the recent win in Rome).
If Davis had got back to 5-4 I would have feared the worst . Amazing for Jo to come back from 0-40 in that final game to win .
Just shows if you dont finish the opponent off before you know it you can be in deep trouble . Perhaps she heard about Bertens retiring and it put more pressure on her .
We saw the best and worst of Jo today , a very good first set , poor second , brilliant third to the latter stages and superb to get that final game when what had gone before could have caused a total meltdown .
I really want her to come through, but Bencic is a set down in her match with Siegemund. Vekic looking like she might be the highest remaining seed in this section.
Aww, so we are going to be denied another match between the top clay season points scorer ( Bertens ) and the third top ( Jo! ).
Including ( debatably, but it anyway doesn't change the top order ) US green clay and looking at total clay points scored by quarter finalists or better in Madrid and Rome and semi finalists or better in the Charleston and Stuttgart Premiers ( so should have captured all contendors ) I make the top clay points scorers coming into the French Open as:
1. K Bertens 1590 - then out ( retired ) in R2 in the French Open 2. Ka Pliskova 966 - into R3 vs Martic 3. J Konta 830 - into R3 vs Kuzmova 4. P Kvitova 790 - withdrew before the start 5. M Sakkari 771 - into R2 vs Siniakova 6. P Martic 680 - into R3 vs Ka Pliskova
Now there are clearly very big points still to be collected by later stagers here but who saw what Jo has achieved so far coming ??!!
Bencic was 4-6 2-4* in her match with Siegemund, but then managed to win 8 of the next 9 games to go *4-1 up in the final set. Siegemund wanted to come off because of darkness, but they continued and she then won 3 games in a row herself to recover both breaks. So similar to Edmund-Chardy the other night, they'll come back tomorrow with either player potentially 2 games away from the match.
