Week 22/23 - French Open, Roland-Garros, Paris, (Clay)

Why did Kyle retire? I saw elsewhere he was saying he couldn't move his legs...fitness (again)?

His own personal trainer came on, commentators said left knee.

From the Beeb's text commentary:

Ah, all becomes clear. Edmund has called the trainer. The medical man crouches down in front of the Brit to see what the problem is.

He doesn't look too well to me, but is also sharply extending his leg, almost as though he is saying he's tweaked something in his knee.

It does make me wonder if Kyle has been carrying something for a while. I didn't see much of the match today or any of his first round match, so perhaps I am not in the best position to judge. But having had such a poor run of results leading into RG, the logical thing to do last week was to seek a WC into Lyon or Geneva to get some match practice. But he didn't do that. Has he been hiding a niggling injury ?

I know some will shout "Conspiracy Theory" or "making excuses" and they may be right. But Kyle hasn't been "Kyle" in my opinion almost all year. He is not a person who would have walked off court today unless there was a really genuine reason for doing so.

I just hope he hits the grass court season fully fit and healthy.

To be fair, if I were Kyle's trainer and it was even only a tiny niggle, and he'd played five long sets and he was now two sets down, and all the grass season was coming up, I'd sign for him to come off too.

It certainly can be said that in the most part this year Kyle hasn't been Kyle or at least close to the best Kyle has often shown in the past for whatever reason, possibly a combination of reasons.

The lack of confidence that Jim Courier referred to is in there but that has possibly come from ongoing other issue(s) and certainly results.

It is such a pity to see him so far off his proven previous not just potential but actual proven ability.

Lo and behold - Russell Fuller has just tweeted this.

A left knee injury is confirmed as the reason for Kyle Edmunds retirement - that first became an issue in Paris at the end of last season.

Yes, I had been thinking that a knee had certainly been the issue earlier this year. So the fear was ongoing issues with the same knee.

Great. Another player to add to the GB injury list. Worrying if the knee is still causing issues half a year on.

A more substantial report by Jonathan Jurejko for the Beeb.

Does anyone know why Delpo has had the trainer on? Knee, wrist or something else?

From another forum but the ITV coms were discussing this and if Kyle is getting the best advice from his team. Playing through it doesn't exactly seem to be working...

As 20 year-old Moutet lost 4-6 in the fifth, in the third round of RG, I can't help remembering him losing to Hamish Stewart two years ago at the Bank of England club.

I hope Hamish remembers it too - and takes heart !
