General football thread

Well done our Leeds friends on here!

Obviously well, well down the pecking order in an amazing final day, but it's safe to say it's been a season of two halves for Newcastle:

First 19 games, P19 W1 D8 L10 PTS 11
Second half, P19 W12 D2 L5 PTS 38

2 points per game from the halfway stage, amazing.

Elsewhere Man City go 2-0 down at home to Villa. But can Liverpool beat Wolves?

 Not 0-2 down for long.....

Lord, this is tense - top and bottom.....

Yes, Liverpool could beat Wolves. But so could Man City come back and beat Villa.

What a day !

Yes, it's easy for us comparative neutrals to keep up to date and add light comments.

But I think back to my non watching of in particular big ( eg. actually maybe get out of a finals group! ) Scotland games in the past and maybe again in a couple of weeks if we have a World Cup play-off final against Wales.

Is the match with Ukraine likely to happen, Indy?

Yeah, I was hoping Leeds would stay up, but there was obviously no jeopardy, so I was just enjoying watching it all unfold. Brentford down to 9 men helped towards the end, but it must have been pretty nerve wrecking knowing at the time, late on, a Burnley equaliser could have been curtains.

Such a crazy, eventful final day, and that's why we love the sport.

Not going to lie here, but when Brentford equalised, I turned the TV off and went for a walk for 15 mins. I couldn't take it.

Came back just as Harrison scored. Didn't even know that Brentford were down to 9 men by then.

I can't take too many more seasons like that one. But we made it in the end.

Yes. Scotland vs Ukraine is scheduled for Hampden on Wednesday 1st June.

Wales vs Scotland or Ukraine is scheduled for Cardiff on Sunday 5th June.

So we've got to get past a Ukraine that most folk no doubt want to win ( some folk reckon that they should he able to get in a reducer or two early on without any great sanction ). Win that and we'd face a well rested Wales, particularly such as Bale and Ramsey who struggle to play two games in a week.

 Whats a reducer ?!

do you think Ukraine could field a team? Or are they already overseas?

A 'reducer' is a fairly violent intimidatory foul. Some folk are theorising that the ref wouldn't be dishing out an early red card to Ukraine.

I don't know any real details about the Ukrainian team, just that they agreed to the rearranged date a fair time ago now so no doubt will turn up with a team. I'd guess a fair number of them play in foreign leagues anyway such as Yarmolenko and Zinchenko in England

A lot of the squad were based within Ukraine, but there are a fair number playing overseas.
A lot of the home based players haven't played much and they have tried to get several friendlies set up before the matches

Presumably Wales will play a warm up as well. England should play them to get them nicely in tune!

Have to say regardless of Ukraines situation, Id love to see Scotland play Wales, memories of Anfield back in 1977. Id actually be neutral on the winner but would be good to see another British team join England in the finals.

Ah, I now see that Wales are away to Poland in a Nations League game on Wednesday 1st June when Scotland are playing Ukraine. I doubt though Bale will be much to be seen for that game.

The final World Cup qualifiers are coming up and some good games I reckon

Scotland v Ukraine (European play off semis) - 1st June Glasgow
Wales v Scotland or Ukraine (European play off final) - 5th June Cardiff
Australia v UAE (Asian Play off final) - 8th June Qatar
Peru v Australia or UAE (Final Play off) - 13th June Qatar
Costa Rica v New Zealand (Final Play off) 14th June Qatar

The Qatar stadium being used is where Scotland or Wales, if they qualify, will play all their group games it seems, and that would include England v Scotland/Wales, if it happens. The stadium is in the Al Rayyan district of Doha. I did a lot of work in Doha and Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman, a number of years ago, Doha was a cultural void back then (this is around 10 years ago) so I hope it has become more interesting since then! Playing football in June is going to be HOT though!
