General football thread

Remember before it went wrong at Bournemouth, Eddie Howe was touted as the next England manager and also as a future Arsenal manager. And he may well still be, hes a good manager, and only really Potter is up there with him as a similar future England boss, IMO. Not sure I rate Gerrard or Lampard at that level yet, amongst English born premier league bosses.

28 points from 13 is European form - Chelsea are 3rd and average 2 per game. Not saying Newcastle are champions league level yet but top half certainly looks like a level they could sustain.

I told you they were safe a few weeks ago!

Liked Evertons draw tonight - leeds are safe as well really and that just helps.

I absolutely love Eddie. Such dedication and meticulous attention to detail. It's cliche, but you just get the impression that he gets the club and city, that he's so proud to be here, and I really want him to do well. I hope he's here for years and years, given a bit of leeway if there are a few hiccups, and be the one to take them from 19th/20th to eventually, in good time, challenging for the European places again. I fully trust him.

We have Liverpool (H) and Man City (A) in our final 5 games, and Arsenal (H) who are obviously still chasing top 4, so it will be very tough to finish top half this season, and it's so tight between about 7 clubs, so we could still end up 14th or 15th, but I'd be more than fine with that, especially with how it was looking not long ago. Hopefully bring in 3 or 4 Bruno type signing in the summer and finish comfortably 8th to 10th next season (with no real threat of relegation all season), and just push on little bits each year. Very exciting times here Jon.

Yeah, I was disappointed they equalised late, but it was a winnable match for them, so it will probably feel like 2 points dropped. Bob was referring to it either on this thread or 'Leeds', but it does feel ages since Leeds last played, but you are in decent form yourself, and very long odds at the bookies to go down, so you should indeed be fine.

It shows what difference a new manager can make even with the same squad by getting the training, formation and morale sorted. Its not rocket science, its good management. Shows how Lampard clearly doesnt have that skill set , and Burnley need to make the right appointment quickly. And Man Utds choice will be fascinating also.

Always been impressed with Eddie Howe. You've certainly got a good'un up there in Newcastle.

As for Leeds, fans will still be very nervous given our run of games coming up. We have Palace (A) on Monday, but followed by Man City (H), Arsenal (A) and Chelsea (H). Hoping that it won't come down to needing a point on the last day at Brentford. Reasonably confident it won't but you never know. I was cursing when Everton equalised last night, but if you had offered me a draw as a result before kick off, I would have taken it.

Hope the Saints go Marching On tonight.

So Burnley beat Southampton 2-0 to further put the frighteners up Everton and Leeds. Villa with their bad run are now next in the betting though still at 100/1.

Latest bet365 relegation odds :

Norwich 1/500
Watford 1/66
Burnley 8/11
Everton 11/8
Leeds 6/1
Aston Villa 100/1

500/1 bar

It may put a bit more pressure on our Leeds fans on here (and I definitely want them to stay up), but it feels good to be in a position to be able to cheer Burnley on to wins at the moment.

It's certainly got more interesting with Burnley picking up 7 points from their last 3 games, and a huge upcoming Merseyside derby at both ends of the table.

A spirited performance from Everton, and they probably can take some positives, but ultimately, nothing to show for their efforts. Interesting run in:

Chelsea (H), Leicester (A), Watford (A), Brentford (H), Palace (H), Arsenal (A)

That looks quite difficult on paper, but fixture timing could be key. Chelsea nothing much to play for and not exactly firing, Leicester will be after their European match, Watford have lost like 10 in a row at home and will probably be confirmed relegated by then, 2 home matches against mid table sides, and having Arsenal last could be quite favourable (in terms of placement) because they could maybe have wrapped 4th up by then, or guaranteed to finish 5th, whereas had that match have been next week, it would have definitely been 'live'.

Burnley have - Watford (A), Villa (H), Spurs (A), Villa (A), Newcastle (H)

Burnley's win has dragged Leeds right back in it (if we were ever out of it) and we have a big game at Palace tomorrow night. Hopefully with Palace mid-table safe, out of the cup and their season basically over, a fresh - not played for two weeks - Leeds United can turn them over.

Three points would help me to sleep better at night.

Yeah, while you are in very good form yourself, 7 points from 3 games in 7 days for Burnley, without you kicking a ball, hasn't really helped, and it looks like you have a few challenging games after Palace.

While I'm not too bothered where Newcastle finish and more just relieved that they will be staying up and can finally push on, and hopefully never have relegation fears for the foreseeable, it would still be quite nice to finish as high as possible, and given our tough run in, we will probably be relying on those below dropping points to make that happen, so I'll be hoping for a Leeds win (and I would definitely prefer you to stay up most out of the 3 in realistic contention).

Palace were poor against Newcastle in midweek, especially the first half where they were pretty awful, so they will be looking for a response at home, but it's definitely a match where you can get something, and I'm quite looking forward to it. Burnley's past 3 days have definitely added something to it from the more neutral perspective, and it's a lot bigger match than it was previously looking.

Now I am worried - my points reckoning now is each of the 3 teams will end up on 37 points, with Leeds having a massively worse goal difference.

Brighton is a big one for Leeds and we need Spurs to take out Burnley as well - as well as many other results.

We all lambasted Burnley for sacking dyche , but it seems to have worked out right so far.

Dang

Shame you are not playing us away. Would definitely have beaten us!

Cant believe we blew it again today. Can beat both Arsenal and Spurs away but cant buy a win at home..very odd

Point gained, or two dropped Leeds fans?

I think on the balance of play you have to be happy with that away point, and it extends the unbeaten run to 5, but then the next 3 games do look trickier on paper than tonight. It will be interesting to see how the table looks in the next 3 or so games. The mood seems positive from these final whistle scenes, so that may answer the question.

Agree. Given the balance of the game, particularly in the second half, I was glad to get away from there with a point.
