Katie really trusts in her forehand and goes for it (and her serve, but that's easier under stress, the forehands are far harder).
Excellent positivity.
Mind you, if Jeff is looking for a choke, Wang's is pretty far up there (although she's young and so it's a bit unfair). But the UEs, DFs, and general collapse wasn't pretty.
So disappointed Heather couldn't find a way to win when she had chances and was playing so well for much of the match. But what a great win by Katie. Did anyone see what happened in the second set as I was amazed to see that score after winning the first. And what composure she showed in the third and fantastic serving to close the match. Really encouraging for the rest of the summer season.
30 points for making Final qualifier 40 for qualifying.
I think I'd have happily taken an offer of a QR2 and a FQR performance from our two entrants before proceedings started, given the surface, form, draws etc.
Hoping Katie can add that cherry to top it off though.
Yes, as Michael says, those qualifying ( plus hopefully more ) points won't be added until the post French Open 10/06 rankings. So with points due off on 27/05 and 10/06 so far their rankings will overall be dropping in spite of these 20 points. But with potential to add back further French Open points and/or other tournament points for 10/06.
Heather : 20/06: WR 105 on 614 points 27/06: around WR 113 on 586 points ( - net 28 points ) 10/06: so far around WR 123 on 536 points ( - 70 + 20, down 50 net points )
Katie S : 20/06: WR 208 on 279 points 27/06: around WR 208 on 279 points ( unchanged points ) 10/06: so far around WR 219 on 269 points ( - 18 - 13 + 1 +20, down 10 net points ).
Shame about Heather, but that Katie result is one of my favourite GB wins of the season as it wasn't looking likely after set 2 and the start of the third. Didnt get to see much of it, but I'll be sure to watch it back on the Player when I can.
Strange match for Heather. She looked really strong going 3-0 up in the 3rd and then stopped running for anything wide and made some poor decisions. She still somehow got to matchpoint but wasn't dominating. In the end the Greek girl looked like she wanted it more and deserved to win. Well done Katie, she's the future.
