Now Jodie is just a game away from the title, 5-2* in the final set. THe last game she looked like she was trying to give it away as went to 30-30 on 2 DFs, but then she won the last two points.
Absolutely fantastic. Not a Murderers Row type run here, but she's beaten so many good players this season already, so maybe deserved a bit of a softer run, especially after facing a top 100 player in her last final.
It's not a bold prediction because I stupidly didn't have her in my top 10, but it genuinely wouldn't surprise me if she finished the season GB #4 or even 3 - a lot of that will depend on how Katie B fairs over the grass with her defending so many points, but it's brilliant that we have another player closing in on the top 200.
It's a bit of a shame that Boulter, Swiatek or Watson didn't gain direct Wimbledon entry when at certain stages it was looking more likely than not, as there'd have been more chance that Jodie got a MDWC. She'll have her chances at Surbiton and possibly Manchester (maybe Nottm) to make an impact and further stake her claim, but it'll be hard to dislodge the 4 Fed Cup team members (if they are all available) and Swiatek, and then she's likely be relying on the ITFs staying in house - unless they break their tradition this year of giving out WCs to the winner of those events.
Still, it's fantastic that there is a lot more genuine competition for WCs now as 2 months ago, it would have been quite hard to fill the quota.
Really pleased for her (and Alex if he's out there)
And, yes, it would be nice if her claim to a MD wildcard place got a boost. She is still one of the 'elite' players, I believe, (or at least the PSP ones) so she's got more chance than if someone on the outside suddenly had a great run. But, as you say, there might not be quite enough to go round.....
Wonderful from Jodie, fantastic to get her first win at this level
At the moment it's hard to know exactly where this will left her ranking, but probably somewhere in the 230s/early240s, ie she still has to do more I think to be considered seriously for a MDWC in Wimbledon. What she has done though is definitely moved ahead of Naiktha in any list (who will likely get a QWC, but that's it).
