Not the easiest of draws for our two men in qualifying.

QR1: Jay Clarke WR = 162 (CH = 159 a few weeks ago) vs (q17) Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ESP) WR = 136 (CH = 127 only two weeks ago)

QR1: James Ward WR 174 (CH = 89 in  July'15) vs (q23) Oscar Otte (GER) WR = 139 (CH =  129 in Oct '17)

I'd be very happy if we still had an interest in the mens qualifying competition by tonight.

Storming start for Jay, 4-0*. Spaniard only won 1 point on opening 2 service games.

Good start from Jay. 4-0 up in the first set. Crossed post!

Jay definitely deserved that set. Played far more solid tennis.

But for a clay courter, Alej D-F shanked the most amazingly high number of balls...... really weird....

He is 19! Still plenty of time to learn to not shank.

Jay has got the break back.

I don't think 19 needs an exclamation mark

For such a high ranked junior, and now adult, and a clay specialist, I would not expect so many awful errors.

But, yes, I guess he was nervous, thought he had a good chance to win, and just started badly. The second set has certainly been a lot closer. Mainly because the Spaniard is playing better. (Although Jay is standing hugely far back - I really don't think he needs to so much).

Argh! Will take big effort for Jay to get back into this having been pegged back from such a strong position.

Fear the worst and hope for the best!

That's a terrific effort from Jay. It was commented earlier that Davidovich beat Evo recently, in Portugal qualies. He also went on to reach the SF that week (an ATP250) beating Fritz, Chardy and Monfils on the way.

What a shame Jay couldn't get over the line in that 2nd set.

Jay was very much an underdog for me here. Shame he couldn't serve it out - that will be a tough one to get over.
