Week 20 - ITF (W60) - Saint Gardens, France - Clay

It's been discussed on here before, probably last year, as I think someone (maybe CD) said some French people on social media weren't best pleased with Eden getting a WC last year, and I can see their point a bit. It's obviously not at all a Pula situation and there are links with Eden and the club, so it is justified in some respects, but at the same time, if Bath had a W60 event, it would be a bit annoying if someone like Nadja Gilchrist got a MDWC just for living / training there. I guess with it being so close to RG, that won't help the French peoples feeling.

I understand some won't agree though and to be fair, some of the French alternatives haven't exactly been in great form in the various big home ITF events in recent weeks, and many would have likely lost by a similar score line anyway.

There are always some people who will bitch and moan, French as well as everyone else.

But, although I remember quite a lot complaining last year about Eden, that was BEFORE they'd realised that she played for the team. I don't think there was any one of note, or any in numbers, who complained after.

Team tennis is such a big thing, a core to all tennis fans/players.

And the tournaments are very much local events, not anonymous FFT events that are just hosted in some town, drawn from a hat.

So I think people accepted it fine once they realised.

On top of which, St Gaudens is next to Toulouse (south west). So a GB player, from the club, with obvious Portuguese connections, even if in the very dim past, will almost certainly be a LOT more popular than a generic, unknown player from Paris.

Slow start for Harriet. 0-3*, only won 2 points on serve.

"R32: Harriet DART (GBR) [4] 143 vs Anna DANILINA (KAZ) [Q] 359 (CH:340 Dec 12)"

Danlina is another top junior who's never transitioned properly to adults. She was JWR 3, but her adult top rank (WTA 340) was while she was still a junior. Maybe she had some injury problems?

Harriet is 0-3 down. But she quite often seems to start a little slowly (not sure that is statistically true or just based on a few matches I remember).

So time for a reaction....

She's not too far off the doubles top 100, so has been concentrating on that a bit more, didn't realise her Jr CH was that high though.

Very good response from Harriet though to level it up. *3-3.

Harriet won 5 games in a row and was serving for the set, but has just been broken. 5-4*

Harriet won 12 of the next 13 games after that 'slow start' and wins 6-4 6-0. Likely to face US top youngster Gauff in the next round as she is a 1/5 favourite to beat her Italian LL.

Well done Harriet.

It is the 15 year old Cori Gauff who Harriet will face in R2 after getting past the LL.

Harriet is currently in the early stages of her doubles match.

Week 20 - ITF (W60) - Saint-Gaudens, France - Clay

Harriet 3rd on after 9am tomorrow. The bookies have it razor tight, but young Gauff as the ever so slight favourite, 4/5 vs 10/11. It's a really hard one to gauge, Hev beat her comfortably at US Open quald last year, but then she was 9 months younger then and just about 14 and a half. She has had some good results in the US recently, but then did lose 1-6 1-6 against Quinn Gleason last week. Women's tennis is inconsistent at the best of times and I guess even more so when you have a youngster with obvious potential and talent, but still maturing and not as polished.

An intriguing match and I'll try and catch a bit of it on the streams they provide.

Edit - FWIW, Gauff is now 4/6 and Dart 11/10, so a little bit of money has probably gone on the youngster.
