Week 20 - ITF (W60) - Saint-Gaudens, France - Clay

In France, Eden does indeed have a MDWC this year again (I understand this is the club where she plays French team tennis), and Harriet will play a qualifier. Katie S was on the acceptance list, but is missing from the MD.

R32: Eden SILVA (GBR) [WC] 426 vs Anna KALINSKAYA (RUS) 176 (CH:127 June 17)

R32: Harriet DART (GBR) [4] 143 vs Anna DANILINA (KAZ) [Q] 359 (CH:340 Dec 12)

Edit: I've added in Harriet's opponent now.

Week 20 - ITF (W60) - Saint Gardens, France - Clay

Harriet and Danka Kovinic (MNE) are top seeds in the doubles and have a bye to the QF.

Eden and Camilla Rosatello (ITA) are 4th seeds.

Surprised that Beth isn't playing/hasn't been given a wildcard, given she is now playing for the team.

Maybe an injury? But she played here yesterday, both singles and doubles, so was obviously OK then. And then has gone to Portugal?  Bit bizarre.....

Eden's wildcard is obviously understandable, for the same reason. And she gets one most years. As it good and proper.

Does seem a bit bizarre - I agree, especially as she played there last year. But as far as I can see this is Beth's eighth tournament in Obidos in two years, plus others in Portugal.

Harriet gets Kazakh doubles Fed Cup member Danilina in R1. 15 year old top Jr Cori Gauff plays a LL and the winner of that one will play the winner of Harriet's match in R2.

Eden has just lost the first set 2-6

But actually the tennis was slightly closer than the score suggests.

Was just about to post this score, went with serve early on, but 5 straight games for the Russian.

Hmm, not really that close. From *2-2 Eden has lost 26 out of 34 points to be *0-2 in the second set.

The first set's actual tennis was reasonably close, the rallies. Haven't watched the second....

Ah, ok - I can't watch the stream from work right now, just looked at the momentum graph.

It's been discussed on here before, probably last year, as I think someone (maybe CD) said some French people on social media weren't best pleased with Eden getting a WC last year, and I can see their point a bit. It's obviously not at all a Pula situation and there are links with Eden and the club, so it is justified in some respects, but at the same time, if Bath had a W60 event, it would be a bit annoying if someone like Nadja Gilchrist got a MDWC just for living / training there. I guess with it being so close to RG, that won't help the French peoples feeling.

I understand some won't agree though and to be fair, some of the French alternatives haven't exactly been in great form in the various big home ITF events in recent weeks, and many would have likely lost by a similar score line anyway.

Eden and Camilla Rosatello (ITA) have won their first round doubles easily enough 6-2 6-1

They play a Russian pair in the QF.
