Funny, but Emily, Naomi and Heather all went through long horrible spells without winning a match. Look what a bit of confidence can do.
Naomi's Japan record of 4-3 (inc. 2 in Qs) these past few weeks is definitely an improvement from what she's shown these past 12 months, but it hasn't really been enough, and certainly not on par with the other 2. She's beaten an unranked QWC where she was 1/200, and then 399, 308 and 671 and lost to all 3 who she faced in the top 300. She may well have lost to the likes of Sema and Namigata a couple of months ago, and seemingly competed well today, so perhaps small signs of progress, but these generally weak (and big) hard ITF events when pretty much everyone is in Europe were an ideal opportunity to pick up the big points she was losing anyway, but that's not happened - she dropped 8 more points this week alone than she has picked up in the 3 events combined, and as a result she's now out of the live top 400 and will be at her lowest ranking since 2009.
If she feels better about herself / her tennis and the stats show improvement, then hopefully she can do well in the Japan W25 next week and then take that into the grass season because that really is her last chance for some time to play big events where the conditions will be more in her favour to rebuild her ranking. If she doesn't, it's going to be W25 qualies for a while.
Yes, 1 for qualifying, and QF is 9 points, SF is 18, final is 30 and winner is 50. Singles and doubles the same.
So the four remaining Brits have already got 74 points between them, with more to come.
I've nothing against Emily but I really hope Mandy wins. She desperately needs to get her ranking back up so she can get direct entries into tournaments. Either way it's great to have two Brits playing each other in the QF.
The match promises plenty of breaks. The second game was 14 pts long and Mandy won it on her 3rd BP.. but Emily then broke back on her 2nd BP the following game. So only one hold so far.
.. and 4th game Mandy with another break so she now leads *3-1 with the only hold.
A long game, which Mandy finally holds on her fourth set point (saving 4 break points) to take the first set 6-1. Now Bet365 shows 66-1 on for the match.
I thought Emily was going to go into a 3-0 lead at the start of the second set to make the match interesting, but Mandy struck back from 0-40 down with Emily serving, eventually to break Em to bring the score back on serve *1-2
