Yes, disappointing today. The score is still not showing on live scores yet, so reading here was also my first news. With luck Heather has just about done enough to squeak into Wimbledon MD, before she starts shedding points again in two weeks time.
QF: Heather WATSON (GBR) [1] 110 lost to Kaylah MCPHEE (AUS) [7] 237=CH 5-7 2-6
Great to get last week's title, getting wins under her belt and a decent scalp in the final. But this week has consisted of a couple of 3 set wins against opposition ranked in the 300s and now this loss.
Yeah, shame for Heather, but it kind of did feel like a case of when she'd get beat this week not if, with her previous scores and the matches probably have caught up with her. Shame also for the Wimbledon direct entry race, she's 104 in the live rankings, which may or may not be enough depending on the PR/withdrawal ratio and it certainly won't be helped if Pera and McHale both reach the Trnava final as both will pass her and 106 probably wouldn't get in.
McHale, a bit like Heather was, is on a 7 match winning streak having won a French W80 event last week to put her into contention from out of nowhere, but she has also needed 3 sets to win her 2 matches in Trnava and she faces Lottner today and either Blinkova/Frech tomorrow and she needs to win both, so hopefully the matches will catch up with her.
2nd seed Pera plays Siegemund today and potentially Cepede Royg/Bondar in the semi final and she will also pass Hev if she wins both of those.
I was disappointed too, but I can't help wondering if she had one eye on the flight back to Europe for next week's RG qualifying? Playing a final on Sunday would make it quite a rush to get back to start in Paris on Tuesday.
