In the doubles, Tara is paired with Emina Bektas again, and Naomi is playing with Ayaka Okuno. Naomi + are 3rd seeds; winners of their respective matches will play each other in the QFs, unfortunately.
Naomi is dead lucky to be facing a player ranked 671 in the first round of a W60, promising junior though she might be!
R32: Heather WATSON (GBR) [1] 110 vs Haruka KAJI (JPN) 315 (CH:283 Jan 18) R32: Naomi BROADY (GBR) 372 vs Himeno SAKATSUME (JPN) [LL] 671 (CH:633 May 19) 17 yrs (JCH:113 June 18)
Heather beat her 2 and 1 last week, but I actually remember someone saying the scoreline might have flattered her a bit when looking at the stats and you certainly can't take anything for granted with Naomi these days, but can't complain with that one.
I wonder what's up with Katy? I assumed / hoped it would just have been fatigue retiring last week, but maybe a bit more to it. She is/was down for a Korean W25 next week so wonder if she plans to play that, or just get home earlier to prep for the grass.
Yes, in the end I don't think Katy's rush to Japan, after winning in Spain was that good an idea. She and Maia are still in the MD for Korea next week, but if she's not playing here this week, will be surprised if she turns up in Korea. Would seem a lot of unnecessary kicking heels, especially if she now has some kind of niggle.

More unfortunately they actually meet straight off in the L16.

So they do What happens when you try and read a draw straight off a long overnight flight
In Kurume today the only Brit involvement is in the doubles where Tara and Emina, who on balance I would prefer to win, have beaten Naomi and Ayaka 6-3 3-6 10-6
Next up they will face Hayashi and Uchijima, an unseeded Japanese pair.
Heather will play Bektas in R2 if she wins her first match. 2 seeds have gone, but both were in the other half and included the 2nd seed, who lost 1-6 1-6 to a Japanese WC.
I note 3rd seed Ahn has withdrawn overnight, replaced by LL Bozovic and who went on to win. With the 3rd seed pulling out and the 2nd and 6th seeds losing, only the 8th seed remains of the seeds in the bottom half of the draw, and she is currently a break down in the third. This won't be of concern to Heather, but if Naomi can find something in her game, there is a great opportunity here, as there isn't a seed in her path until the semis.
Edit: 8th seed gone, so no seeds left in Naomi's half of the draw.
