This season hes beaten nishikori, thiem and Medvedev. Resched monte carlo final. But in Rio, cam beat him for loss of 3 games. Guess it depends which dusan lajovic turns up, bedene pushed him close today as well.
This is probably a silly question, but why is the WR 24 playing in qualies - shouldn't he be in the main draw?
He wasn't WR24 when the entry lists closed. He picked up 600 points for reaching the final in Monte Carlo which jumped him up the rankings on 22nd April from around WR48.

Guessing it's because he wasn't world 24 at the time of the entry list date which is some week (6?) before the date of the tournament.
Yes it does look particularly odd, his current ranking is not miles off a seeding in the MD.
But he just missed out with an entry ranking of 48 ( yes, at 6 weeks before, 01/04 ) then he reached the Monte Carlo Masters final and his ranking soared.
Incidentally, last MD direct acceptance Andreas Seppi, entry ranking 47, has gone the other way with his Monte Carlo QF points from last year dropping off. He is now WR 67.
At least we agree

If - IF - Dan beats Lajovic is that his first top 30 win since he came back?
No. When he reached the ATP 250 Delray Beach final in February ( lost to Albot ) he beat Tiafoe WR 29 in R1 and best of all since he came back, beat Isner WR 9 in the SF.

Seppi would be in regardless, he is Italian after all. Like Heather / KB etc would be in the Wimbledon MMD
