Win or lose I think we should make the most of this final because from a British point of view it is something that is unlikely to happen again for some considerable time. Even Rabat was feasible but at the start of the week Rome appeared mission totally improbable. Jo could actually have found herself in qualifying but got into the main draw as an alternate with the usual withdrawals. Win or lose I think Jo's clay court exploits of 2019 are one of the most remarkable performances by a British tennis player.
Brilliant win for Jo :D
Bertens was very lucky not to be defaulted when her racquet hit the line judge.
So glad Jo was able to have the satisfaction of getting the win in normal style though :)
Seems very phlegmatic, and in a rather good all round state of mind.
Thanks for posting SQ. Loved the interview, Jo so much more comfortable and relaxed this year compared with this time last year when she was in denial about the hopelessness of her coaching and tactics. This time round, her talk of her team around her, and having a much more nuanced approach against someone like Bertens, and not a single game plan, is so much better to hear - and obvious to see in her play. Last time round there was only Plan A - be aggressive with her forehand - and when that didn't work, to double down on it even more. This is such an improvement on that.

Jo has just dropped the first set 3-6, she was always playing catch up after a slow, nervy start, but had a wonderful chance to get it back on serve at 3-5 40-30*.
She's just saved a BP in the first game of the second set, and subsequently held. 1-0*

Jo just can't keep playing it down the centre at Plisokova as she can find angles and pace and just picks Jo off.
She's doing well to stay with her though. Pliskova with 86% first serve in and very few unforced errors in first set. After five games in second set, Pliskova only has seven unforced errors to Jo's twenty.

Jo just couldn't find her top game for this match. But some very good signs, in terms of her confidence and her attitude. She didn't back down right until the last point and put Pliskova under pressure a couple of times in that last set. Unfortunately the number of unforced errors, occasional strange shot selection (particularly the drop shots when Pliskova was playing so well at the net) and Pliskova's very high standard of play just pipped her at the post. But what a good week for Jo once again and signs she's on her way back.
Ah! It's been a wonderful run.
No real pressure for RG as she's far outperformed expectations on clay already, and heads into grass in much better shape than coud reasonably have been expected.
A round or two in France wouldn't hurt of course.
About 11 months now on preferred surfaces to add to this great haul banked over the last few weeks.
Even if form only holds around about where it has been for much of the year, and there's no real pushing on, it should still be a highly productive time for Johanna, and plenty of interest for the likes of us.
Good work.
(The wait for the next Brit WTA clay title still goes on...)
