Week 18 - ITF (W60) Les Franqueses des Valles, Spain Hard

Katy vs Eden. Don't mind so much in a 60k because it's a good chance for either of them.

Jodie on at 9am and it is being streamed. Bookies have it close, 8/11 Ponchet, Jodie evens.

Last I saw it was *2-2 30-30 in the first set, but from there it ran away from Jodie and she only won 3 more points from there, losing the first set 2-6.

But she has gone an early break up in the 2nd set and has just held for 3-0*.

One of the worst misses I've seen for some time from Jodie - powerful serve, Ponchet did well to return it, bounced and sat up well, Ponchet gave up on the point, but Jodie had an easy put away, but fired wildly wide. Thankfully it didn't affect her as she win the next 4 points to hold comfortably and she still has the advantage in this set. 4-1*

Really good set from Jodie, 6-1. So that's 2 sets in little over 40 mins. Ponchet serving first in the decider 0-0*

Jodie has had a good position in all 3 on Ponchets service games this set, including break points in 2 of them, but hasn't been able to get that deciding point. *2-3.

Jodie gets the first break! *4-3. Come on Jodie.

First sign of trouble this set on serve, but held from 0-30. Ponchet frustrated. 5-3*.

Ponchet misses as easy smash, but saves MP with an ace, and now has game point.

*5-4. Come on Jodie, one hold.

Ponchet saves a match point with an ace, so Jodie to serve for the match at *5-4

Yes, that smash was a sitter - dreadful miss.

Not that that cost her the match as she won that game.

But Jodie won anyway - really good biggrin

It was, but honestly, Jodie missed a far worse one in the second set, Jodie's wasn't a volley and it bounced and sat up nicely for an easy put away with Ponchet nowhere to be seen, but she hit it with far too much power and it went right in the middle of the tram lines, not even close, but it was at 0-0 and she then won the next 4 points to comfortably hold biggrin.

Ponchet is currently ranked 200, so not sure if that technically counts as another 'top 200' win, but either way, it's another very good one to add to the collection this year. Mind, she's playing top 200 at the moment, so shouldn't be too much of a surprise. That's a nice 8 points for her and a winnable 2nd round match against someone guaranteed to be lower ranked than her.

She's really staking a claim for a Wimbledon WC. Up to around 190 in the race (having played less events than many around her), a number of top 200 wins, still a teenager. She just needs to get 40 odd more points between now and late June (to close in on the Q cut off) and hopefully have a couple of good wins / performances in the early grass events and it'll be hard to look past her. She still has a few 1 point counters to replace and nothing to defend until Birmingham - Fed Cup aside, she's been the individual highlight of the year by a mile for me.
