It really is fantastic. With the rain washout and 3 matches in 2 days, and her 4-5 0-30* to Stojanovic around midday on Saturday, it was kind of like, 'ah well, 15 points secured, another QF, a bit of progress, hopefully Jodie can beat Nina...' to turning that match around, beating Jodie and then the final all in 24 hours - that's 65 extra points in the bag, almost out of nowhere - the equivalent of reaching Nottingham QF.
It'll be interesting to see if she does show up in Japan. It is a tight turnaround, but with her scheduled to play the W60 the week after, it would be great if she could get there as she might face a poor MDWC or something, and she does have a few points coming off, so the more points she can get in the coming weeks, to at least preserve that circa 236 ranking, the better.
Just having a quick look at the entry Fukuoka list and where she is in relation to the current seeds - Diyas, Watson, Liang, Marino, Shimizu and Ahn should all be ahead of her, but she will now be ranked higher than Kobori (by 1 place) and Loeb (by 2 places) who were scheduled to be seeds, so unless they handed out 2 MDWCs to the likes of Hibi and Nara, like what Spain did with Badosa Gibert, then Katy should be a seed, which should make her start easier.
I hope this gives her a massive confidence boost for the rest of the year now.
She's down for the events in Japan the next 2 weeks. I wonder if she will make the trip now?
I was wondering about next week with Katy being down to play in Japan. It may be too tight to get there in time to start on Tuesday, but I'm pretty sure Katy would be keen to carry on playing if she could now she's finally on a winning streak. So pleased for her. Feel sorry for those who left her out of their top 10 predictions (ha ha)!!!
Yep, that's me
couldn't get everyone in and Katy D (injury) and Naomi (form) has to be sacrificed.
But that's the great thing - you're so pleased when they do well, coz that's so much more important, it doesn't matter.
Far better than putting someone in and them then doing badly - there's no saving grace in that at all.... (Gabi?)
This is so true. I left Jodie out - she was my no 11 - and I'm still really chuffed to see her doing so well. Obviously I was only joking about Katy because of the discussion we had earlier in the year in the predictions thread.
All the other girls seem to have benefitted from a sudden surge up the ranking but Katy D has stagnated for a while. Maybe this is the start of her surge up the rankings, hopefully well into the top 200 and even within striking distance of 100.
Late, but this was super news.
I think Katy is the first GB player to win a title above the bottom ITF rung (i.e. above $10/15K) and for the level of that event not to be a $25K. She has hurdled right up to $50/60K - a level that we don't seem to do well at, having had more successes at $75/100K.
Obviously, the hope is that this, and the news of her re-found appetite for the game, heralds a new chapter with this as the stepping stone on-wards and upwards.
For all the deserved attention Katy is getting, let's not forget Eden won the biggest title of her career too.
Yes somehow that result was posted by wolf but without any real signalling that it was actually a final a Brit had won (even if two Brits also lost). But certainly worth bringing back and celebrating too on this end page
