I think Dan has never really given himself much chance on the red stuff so his quality is largely untested, but he did ok at Barcelona before his ban in his first real big event outside Paris. Having spent time practicing with Federer last week , his confidence should be higher and a win should be possible today.
Probably where his ranking is at the moment. I often get the feeling that some people say Dan should use the clay season for some rest or follow the hard court challengers because clay is not for him.
It is not his best surface, but that could be said of many people. I would put Dan as Top 100 on Clay and Top 50 (or better) on other surfaces.
Dan doing his best to prove my point right now and is 5-2* up.
FQR: (q2) Daniel Evans WR 86 vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ESP) WR 171 (CH = 168 two weeks ago)
Looks as though Dan went walkabout in the second set, losing it by 1-6.
Or just maybe his opponent is good/playing better/worked out the game strategy? Fokina is 19 so an up and comer, was SF at the junior FO and winner of junior Wimbledon in the same year. He *can* play.
