Thanks for sharing, it was very interesting .. more confirmative than informative. From what I've gathered from elsewhere the thing that some people might not get is that Tennis is not the be all and end all for Emma or her family, just what she is concentrating most of her energy on at the moment, before she goes up to Cambridge, and then onto other goals.

But while she is focussing on tennis, I believe she wants to absorb and analyse everything to maximise what she can learn about tennis, from an intellectual point of view, not just about a personal tennis performance point of view. I think what comes across to some people as ruthless is in reality might be more akin to relentlessness to learn, absorb and understand as much as possible.

What I find frustrating is that as a result of all the analysis she is not putting as much time into correcting her game following that analysis. She has some fundamental problems with her game, notably the service and drive volleys, and directing her play closer to tramlines, but she does not seem to be correcting them. Possibly because she's waiting for a significant moment to do that (otherwise she feels she will get worse before she gets better). I hope that's the case as paralysis by analysis uses up time, and a tennis player's career time is short (and hers I feel will be shorter because I believe she won't hang around once she's achieved what she wants).

I don't know why you would think that when she's said herself she expects to play into her thirties (as most pros do these days).

She was 19 when she said that, things change and we learn more about ourselves.

I found this article really interesting - thanks Emmsie. The thing I took from it is that there is a real danger Emma over analyses everything. Tennis is a sport and like all sports, there is an opponent and that opponent does unexpected things. You cant control many things in a game of tennis and you have split seconds to react. if you think too deeply and dont rely to an extent on instinct and feel, youll come undone. Youll often be out of place, not in the ideal setting for your shot as the opponent has done something which you need to react to - they are trying to win the game also.

you cant make that an engineering or maths thesis.

when Emma won that US Open, maybe she was free and easier compared to now and maybe that is, more than anything, what she can get back to help her rise those extra notches back to someone threatening for those titles again.

Her father sounds a real problem

(for tennis, not for being a good dad)

Yes, I've thought that for a long time. He appears to have had far too much of a say in all her coaching changes. It's her career, not his, and he seems to overreach himself.

Hope he can continue to be a good Dad but play much less of a part in her tennis decision making, as she hopefully increasingly takes more control of her own career, while able to take on advice from whosoever she chooses to beyond her family ( to whom at times she may just have to say "no" ).

And I personally think she herself sees herself in tennis for a long time to come with remaining big ambitions.

Hopefully just precautionary before the big one.

Although a very big fan of Emma, I have not been uncritical of some of her scheduling and absences.

But I do think, to be fair here, she has had big issues in the past such as her surgeries, and in recent times she's clearly had back problems, which is an area that can often be unpredictable and troublesome.

So I certainly give her slack for this. Take the week off, see how she feels prior to Eastbourne, but most importantly be as right as possible for Wimbledon.

Seems there is time for others to enter and then they take the top 8 combined rankings entries and add 8 wildcards. Interestingly, no mens doubles specialists here at all, obviously the singles ranking entry scuppers that.

Players still have time to sign up before the July 28 cutoff, and there is no guarantee that the 16 teams announced Tuesday will actually be in the draw in New York. The top eight teams based on their combined singles ranking will automatically get into the field; the other eight pairings will receive wild cards determined by a USTA committee.

"Once there was an understanding of what the event was, [players] went and ran with it," said Eric Butorac, USTA senior director of player relations and business development. "They found their own partners -- whether it was a friendship, a countryman or some even teaming up with a partner that they have off the court."
