Week 17 - ATP 500 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, Barcelona, Spain (Clay)

That's a shame, those chaps from tennis abstract are often right though.

I didn't see the match, but it's more the manner of it. I don't think many would be too surprised to see a clay court specialist, playing at home, beat Cam, even if he was a lower ranked qualifier, but to lose seemingly routinely in 56 minutes, 5 days after losing in 80 mins to another qualifier (Sonego) isn't great.

He's had a great start to the season, probably done better than most would expect, but it always seems like a either surprise deep run or an early exit and very little middle ground. Still, as others have mentioned on other threads, it is still very early days in his clay court career and he'll move on to the next one.

I don't think there is any surprise at all in the result and I don't mean to be disrespectful to Cam in the slightest. Ramos is a highly experienced clay court specialist who has been top 20 in the world. I vaguely remember him having a run a couple of years back where he beat almost everyone.

Just looked back. It was Monte Carlo 2017 where he beat

Olivo
Berlocq
Murray
Cilic
Pouille

before losing to Nadal in the final.

The following week, at Barcelona, Andy did get his revenge in the QFs but it still went 7-6 in the 3rd.

Cam is still very new to clay and everything is a learning experience at this stage. It would have been great for him to win but he shouldn't be worried by that defeat at all. It happens.

I saw a little bit of the match - Ramos looked in top form - don't be surprised if he's starting one of those runs.

Granollers , Dan's conqueror beat jarry in fqr. Jarry gets a lucky loser spot, draws granollers and beats him in 3 sets. Granollers gets 10 points, jarry has 4 for fqr and 20 for first round win, making 24. Jarry is a lucky man.

Jarry has now gone on to take out Sascha Zverev

Wow, says a lot about how one  day can make all the difference, how equal standards are and probably a lot more about Zverev as well.

Cant see Lendl sticking around much longer with him....

L16:  Ivan Dodig & Edouard Roger-Vasselin (CRO/FRA) CR 54 (31+23) vs (2) Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares (BRA) CR 17 (8+9)

Jamie & Bruno beat Dodig & ERV in three sets (13-11 in the MTB) in the last 16 in Monte-Carlo earlier this week.  Let's hope that's a good omen.

Another MTB required:

L16:  (2) Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares (BRA) CR 17 (8+9) defeated Ivan Dodig & Edouard Roger-Vasselin (CRO/FRA) CR 54 (31+23) by 7-5 1-6 [10-5]

Rafa in a v tight match at moment with Leo Mayer, 1-1 third set.

I have a feeling this will be the year Rafa's French crown slips - dont know who will take it though! Thiem is my favourite at the moment...

Thiem winning I can get on board with (anyone but Stan and Novak!)

At last a more straightforward win for the boys:

QF:  (2) Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares (BRA) CR 17 (8+9) defeated Jean-Julien Rojer & Horia Tecau (NED/ROU) CR 59 (23+36) by 3 & 3  smile

Very much a straightforward win, Jamie & Bruno were just too good and always looked in control of the match.
