Men's Team Tennis 2019 (ex National Club League NCL)

An exciting start to the national team tennis South East Division on Sunday.

Gary Lewis withdrew his former national champions A1 Pharmaceuticals team the day before their first match with newly promoted Thorpe Bay. He had 3 players including Marcus Willis and Patrick Foley but couldn't find a 4th for the match. He struggled all last season for players and has had enough of the stress involved. As one of the only teams to pay all their players this is a blow for the competition and removes opportunities for aspiring pros to earn some extra money. Further weakening the competition in the process. They are automatically relegated which means only one other team out of 7 will be relegated with them, on paper probably Thorpe Bay.

Queens make their debut in the top division. They got singles wins from Peter Torebko (CH 182 Jul 2012) who was playing his first ever LTA sanctioned match and Francisco Dias (CH 954 Sep 2011) who was playing his first match for Queens. Roehampton fought back with singles wins for Joe Salisbury and Adam Thornton Brown (who played for Dukes Meadows last year). Joe and Adam also won their doubles to take the match into a tiebreak shootout with Queens snatching the win.

Sutton made a strong start to their campaign with a 12-0 thrashing of Dukes Meadows who were without captain Neil Bamford and the high profile transfer Adam TB. Ryan Storrie, Jack Findel-Hawkins, Alex Jhun and Jack Carpenter all registered straightforward wins in singles and doubles. Evan Hoyt also played in the doubles, probably just for eligibility reasons as the match was already won.

Raynes Park had Liam Broady at no.1, Scott Clayton at 2. and Josh Goodall at 3. Liam and Scott won their singles, but Josh surprisingly lost his. Liam lost his doubles but the team won 8-4 overall.

The second round of matches has now been played:

Queens club beat Dukes Meadows 10-2, with singles wins for Peter Torebko, Tom Colautti and Oscar Podlewski. Lewis Burton teamed up with Oscar to win their doubles. George Coupland got the only win for Dukes Meadows against Francisco Dias. So newcomers Queens are top of the league with two from two.

Thorpe Bay managed to field their strongest team to get a crucial win over Cumberland away. Ryan Peniston, Rob Carter, Marshall Tutu and David Wright all getting singles and doubles wins for a 12-0 thrashing, this should very much help in the quest to stay in this division.

Roehampton had a thriller vs Raynes Park, Mark Whitehouse at no.1 and Lee Childs at no.3 picking up singles wins for Raynes, while Adam Thornton Brown and Anton Matusevich took their singles for Roehampton. Chris Archer teamed up with Oli Golding for a doubles win, but Lee Childs and Mark Whitehouse were too strong for Adam TB and Anton. So tied at 6-6 the shootout commenced with Roehampton snatching the win.

The third round of matches were played last weekend:

Queens, missing their previous top two players, lost their undefeated record with a 10-2 defeat to DL Raynes Park. Mark Whitehouse, Johnny O'Mara and Josh Goodall with singles wins and a surprising loss for Jamie Baker. Scott Clayton teamed up with Johnny to win their doubles.

Roehampton beat a depleted Thorpe Bay by the same scoreline 10-2. Marshall Tutu beat Arthur Fery at no.1 but that was the only win for Thorpe Bay. Oscar Weightman, Oli Golding and Anton Matusevich picking up the other points.

Sutton maintained their undefeated record and top of the league status with a 8-4 over Cumberland (now rooted to the bottom of the table). Jonathan Gray, Joshua Goodger and Tom Burn picking up singles wins. While Timothy Mathewson picked up two match wins for Cumberland.

Cumberland vs Dukes Meadows up next on the 19th of May and with both teams having no wins so far, it could be crucial in terms of relegation.

The Team Tennis National Tier round robins have now been completed. Raynes Park top the division with a tiebreak shootout (when tied 3-3 in rubbers, 6-6 in points) over Thorpe Bay. Mark Whitehouse and Scott Clayton winning singles rubbers for Raynes and David Wright and Edward Pudney winning their singles for Thorpe Bay. They followed this up with a 8-4 win over bottom of the league (and now relegated) Dukes Meadows. Charles Broom and Harry Skinner winning points for Dukes, while Ben Draper and Josh Goodall picked up points for Raynes. Neil Bamford after winning the majority of his matches at this level for a decade, has had a shocker of a season, 0-3 in singles and 0-4 in doubles.

Roehampton, the only team to beat Raynes this year, finish in second place. The masters of the tiebreak shootout, they beat Raynes, Dukes and Sutton all by way of the shootout. For anyone who doesn't know, it's very exciting. If tied at 3-3 in rubbers, one player from your 1. or 2. and another player from your 3. or 4. plays a 10 pt tiebreak, for example 1. vs 2. and 4. vs 3. Then if still tied after that, it's a final doubles tiebreak with the other two players, i.e. p2 & p3.

Sutton and Queens club in third and 4th, join Roehampton in the National Finals play offs versus teams from other areas. Although they normally all make it through to the finals, with the South East being dominant in this competition for years.

Scott Clayton, Peter Torebko and Ben Draper all ended the season undefeated. As did Johnny O'Mara, Lewis Burton and Oscar Weightman, albeit playing less matches.

The National Open plays offs happened the weekend before last. This is where the South East teams finishing 2nd to 4th play the winners from other divisions around the country. It looks like Queens for some reason pulled out so Thorpe Bay took their place.

Roehampton whitewashed DL Sunderland 8-0 (they didn't bother playing the doubles...bit of a shame after a near 300 mile trip) - a strong team of Adam TB, Oli Golding, Joe Salisbury and Anton Matusevich (playing at no.4!)

Sutton beat Wrexham 10-2, with Jonathan Gray, Dan Smethurst, Thomas Burn and Emile Hudd...only Thomas Burn lost, although Mo Morsi took Jonathan Gray close.

Thorpe Bay beat North Oxford 12-0 despite not having Ryan Peniston playing, but Rob Carter, Marshall Tutu, David Wright and Thomas Pudney did the job.

Cardiff beat DL Burton Waters 10-2. Sean Hodkin got a win for Burton Waters but it looks like Dan Cox didn't play the singles for some reason so handed a walkover but did play the doubles (potentially he was injured or late). Tiarnan Brady played for Cardiff but I don't recognise the other names.

In fact Queens did finish 5th on sets difference to Thorpe Bay, my mistake. So the teams in the finals in September are:

South East
Raynes
Roehampton
Sutton
Thorpe Bay

Midlands/Wales
Carisbrooke
Cardiff

North
Manchester Northern

South West
West Hants

The LTA have a good video doing the rounds on social media with Scott Clayton narrating the DL Raynes Park team's trip to the Team Tennis National Finals last weekend. Joe Salisbury and Josh Goodall make appearances.

Once again the gulf in class between South East and the rest of the UK was apparent. The rest of the UK didn't take one rubber off a South East team!

Roehampton beat Carisbrooke 12-0 in the first semi final with a huge team including Glasspool, Matusevich, Fery, Golding, Salisbury and Bloomfield
Completely opposite score in the other semi final. A 6-6 draw between Sutton and DL Raynes Park. Canter beat Whitehouse, Jhun beat Goodall, Romay beat Marsalek with only Jamie Baker beating Jack Carpenter to keep Raynes in the tie. Scott Clayton joined in with the doubles that saw Raynes pick up two rubbers, tying the match at 6-6. With Sutton winning the lottery of a shootout.

Roehampton proved correctly to be top seeds by beating Sutton in the final. Canter beat Glaspool in the only singles rubber for Sutton, Matusevich beat Jhun, Salisbury beat Carpenter, Golding beat Romay. Fery and Golding then teamed up to take the deciding doubles rubber, crowning Roehampton National Champions.

2019 Roehampton
2018 DL Raynes Park
2017 Sutton
2016 A1 Pharma
2015 A1 Pharma
2014 A1 Pharma
2013 Sutton
2012 DL Raynes Park
2011 DL Raynes Park
2010 Bromley
2009 Bromley
2008 Sutton

This event also covered women's team tennis.

And just to repeat Mike Dickson's comment:

No disrespect intended to West Hants but a sport with more joined up thinking would be holding its national club championship finals event at Wimbledon.

Do the French hold their Team Tennis National Finals at Roland Garros?

No, they don't.

Although the elite team tennis finals take place the first weekend of December so the outdoor courts at Roland Garros wouldn't be playable.

I don't know if Australia or the United States hold a national club league, the distances involved would probably be too great. So potentially none of the grand slam nations host their national club league at the home of the grand slam.

It would be great to hold more events at Wimbledon, but presumably it would come at a much greater cost to the LTA than hosting at West Hants and I don't really think the cost could be justified.
