Anyone know why Laura retired? She hardly won a point on serve.
No, but as above, she took an MTO, lying face down on the towel, and seemed to be having her back/hip/something massaged.
Yes, I do wonder what's next now. She now has 9 points and 2 counters post 13/5, so one point and counter short of what she needs to retain her WTA ranking. She's not entered in forthcoming tournaments and in fact has not played outside the UK so far this year. If she's still carrying an injury she may not hurry back either, which means waiting for the grass court season. However unranked, she will be so much further down entry lists, she may not easily get even any QWCs especially as the tournaments then are not 25ks. There are however plenty of W25s + in late April/ early May, so if she is fit enough there are certainly choices for her whilst she still has the all important WTA ranking.
Didn't see that coming when I first saw the score about 30 mins ago, but Noel has taken the first set 5-7. A lot of work for Jodie to do. Noel is looking to make it 7 wins in 7 matches against Brits this past fortnight.

Maybe it's just one too many matches for Jodie, although Noel has obviously had her share. Just looking at the scores (without seeing the match), you do kind of think it's a case of when she will break and then serve it out. Jodie just saved a BP there.
I'll likely still go as I am interested in the other 3 matches (especially if it is Dodin who came through - live scores is still stuck), but there'd be a big difference travelling about 90 mins each way to watch Noel vs Anderson over Jodie vs Anderson. Really hope she can turn this around.
And there's the break, which kind of looked like coming. 3-4*

Jodie saves a MP and makes Noel serve for it, 4-5*. Jodie hasn't had a BP this set and has only won 6 points in Noel's 4 service games, so a big ask...
A bit disappointing, although I obviously have no gauge of the match at all and whether Jodie was struggling physically or if the opponent was just playing better. No real surprise in the first match, but a mid 20's qualifier ranked in the mid 500's has put out a British seed and then a rising Brit who made the final the previous week, to reach the QF.

No idea without seeing the match but Jodie isn't a machine and you run out of steam at some point.
Noel's best results are pretty mediocre, SFs in 15ks and the like. Nothing really above that. But she's obviously playing well at the moment, and had a very nice-sounding, supportive coach constantly egging her on.
But, yes, as Indy says, a little annoying that she decides to hit a bit of form these past two weeks....
I think it's been a slightly disappointing this event for the Brits thus far. It is decent that we have 2 quarter finalists, like last week, but this time one is the top seed and only player in the draw ranked in the 100's, so it's not really a surprise Harriet has got through, although she obviously still has to beat what's in front of her and there are very few gimme's at this level. If Harriet can go on and win it, or at least make the final, then it will obviously be seen far more positively by me.
I am pleased for Tara and it's really good that she backed up that stunning comeback win, but when you see you she's been on the go for a long time, 27 this year, well down the rankings and way off her career high and looks unlikely to get back into the top 250 (although I suppose weeks like this and a continued run would help), it's not as exciting as if it was a Jodie or Emma like last week or a young Vic Allen or Maia, I suppose even Laura as well for nostalgia.
I was told Emma would have competed if she got knocked out early in Bolton, but with her run and 18 points and exams coming up, she decided to sit it out (so Amelia was a late MDWC). And although it was only a 1 hour match with Amelia in her way since last Sunday, that extended run in doubles and singles (and continuing with the dubs this week), probably has ultimately caught up with Jodie, so last weeks success will have played a bit of a part this week.
No idea without seeing the match but Jodie isn't a machine and you run out of steam at some point.

It is annoying when you type her name into Google and see she has 7 wins against players with the British flag on her timeline over the past 2 weeks, but this is the most annoying by far as the others were far more expendable. Naomi has only won 6 times in 11 months and will drop another 100 places soon (and beyond) and is playing like someone well outside the top 500, especially if there is no serve and the other wins were against Mould, Staff, A Pitak and E Morton who are either still at the learning stage or possibly making up the numbers in these events (without wanting to sound too harsh), so this was a great chance for another win and more significant points against someone older and 250 places lower, but yes, you can't win them all. Does feel like a missed opportunity though especially as she pulled out of Uzbekistan the other day so isn't playing for a few week.
