Speaking of youngsters, that 17 year old Polish girl Maja is currently competing really well against top seed Diatchenko. It's 4-4*, but there have been a number of breaks. Imagine an Emma vs Maja final, 16 vs 17.
Kerkhove looks as if she is going to take her QF with Minnen into a final set.
Yeah, Lopatetska got an SE into a Japanese 25k after she played Gabi in another Japanese final, so geography isn't an issue, it was just if there was any restrictions on an SE getting another SE I was thinking, but seemingly not, which is good.
There's no Brits who that potential Emma SE could affect, unlike last week where Emma's ultimately made top Q seed Jodie have to go through quals (doesn't seem to have harmed mind ...). Tara is 7 off so would need too many withdrawals to sneak in directly, there may be a couple of potential withdrawal candidates, but definitely not that many.
Diatchenko edged past Chwalinska in 2 tight sets, 6-4 7-5 to set up the following semi finals:
(1) Diatchenko (RUS) vs (6) Minnen (BEL)
(SE) Raducanu (GBR) vs (Q) Burrage (GBR)
I'd say the top semi final was the most expected outcome before any matches started, given that Diatchenko is currently ranked 96 and has won 2 60k titles this year and that Minnen is currently 97 in the 'Race' this year and has made a WTA quarter final (Minnen was also favourite to beat the higher seed Kerkhove today). Diatchenko is actually 53 in the race.
Our girls have obviously blasted past 4 seeds between them in the past 2 days and it's a great opportunity for either. I think I am happy that they are playing each other in the semi final rather than playing the other 2.
Court 6:
10am - Emma vs Jodie
Diatchenko vs Minnen
N.b. 1pm - Jodie/Alicia doubles
Just noticed that's Court 6 rather than Court 7 or 8 which have been the two streamed courts all week. Lloyd and co are on Court 8, so hopefully that means they are setting some temporary seating on Court 7 and putting the camera on Court 6 instead - surely they can't not stream this one?
Abigail has a nice interview with Jodie (plus Lissey)
I think she is there again tomorrow, but is working for the WTA after that so probably no interactive social media coverage on Sunday or at Sunderland.
It is worth while considering who Emma would consider her natural rival as a contemporary and the rate at which they are transitioning to senior tennis, ie Clara Tauson, who has just won a 60K in China in that respect Emma could really do with a 25K final to keep pace.
I want to see some British girls right at the top of the game and without hesitation would like to see Emma take the tittle here regardless of the opponent.
