Qualifying:

Alan Wright is seeded 15th here.

Rd1: A Wright v M Michelucci [Bra]

It'd be great if Alan was able to qualify for the main draw this week as the past two weeks he's relied on lucky loser spots. Rd1 looks very straightforward against a 17 year old unranked Brazilian who's only played 4 matches in his pro career and has lost them all. The best scoreline he's managed is 6-2, 6-2 in rd1 of a Brazilian futures.
The other seed in Alan's section is 5th seeded Mexican Bruno Rodriguez who's ranked 904. They're seeded to play each other in rd3.

Alan beat Ruiz Mata 6-1 6-2


He faces Diogo Rocha of Portugal in the final round of qualifying.


Alan improved has ranking to a career high 1192 this week with a good performance at Spain F8. Here's hoping he can continue his good form and build some momentum.

Alan beat Rocha 6-4 2-1 ret


He has drawn 5th seed Frank Condor (wr-468) while Morgan Phillips will face Dusan Karol.


It's a tough draw but Alan has chosen though country to make his mark in pro tennis and I think that will be good for him in the future.


By the way I was looking at the LTA site and their list of top boys doesn't include our two top boys, Alan Wright and Daniel Cox. Does anyone know why that is?

Wow, Alan is on fire in the qualies here, hopefully he can take that into the main draw though he's got a very hard match as Niall said. Frank Condor reached the Spain F9 semis last week and in the recent Spanish satellite he reached two finals, winning 1 and losing 1.

Morgan's got the better draw though I don't particularly fancy his chances either, Dusan Karol is ranked quite a bit higher at 592 and a couple of weeks ago he won a clay-court futures title in Morocco, beating the 2006 world junior champion Jeremy Chardy in the final.

Alan's not theoretically on the list of juniors any more as he turned 18 in March. However, he's never been named among our top juniors - I suspect that the LTA aren't happy with the fact that he's never been part of their system - neither has Morgan Phillips. However, I think both of them have made a good decision, Spain is one of the toughest places to play futures and all that experience of playing on clay will mean that their techniques are much more solid than many of their British contempories who've grown up on indoor courts practising one-two combinations.

It's quite weird that Dan Cox isn't down and neither is Daniel Evans [only the best U16 in Europe !!!] Quite amusing aswell that Andy Murray is still listed !!!

Morgan Phillips won 6-7(2) 6-3 6-1


An excelent result aggainst a player ranked 200 places above him. He faces Borja Martinez in the next round who is only 100 places better off.

Morgan Phillips won 7-5 6-2


He faces Tony Holzinger (wr-438) of Germany in the Quarter finals. Holzinger is seeded third but he had to qualify so he has already played 5 matches this week, hopefully that will take something out of him.

Good result for Morgan.


Played 11 won 6 this year so far. Did not do well in the Brit futures on hard courts but seems more suited to the clay. (6 wins out of 9 on clay in 2006).


His next opponent another spaniard is ranked 686 and has been busy this year playing futures and won more than half his 20 or so matches !

Phillips (GB) & Karol (Cze) beat Wright (GB) & Viloca (Esp) 6-4 6-4 in the doubles semi so at least one Brit a final this week !

Has Morgan ever played in an ATP event ?
