Sounds like a right battle for Gabi, but she's over the line. Don't know too much about Wagner and her background, but that's an impressive looking scoreline even if Han may be a bit overranked. Wagner did come through Qs but you'd think she would be the fresher of the two later.
Shame for Jodie, but at leaat she got some wins this event and was already in Japan last week. When you see that Han result and Glushko withdrawing, it looks like she landed in the worst possible qualifying spot.
Not too relevant in the grand scheme of things, but Lopatetska did beat top seed Kumkhum 7-5 6-4 to add to her ever growing reputation.
So ends Gabi's current Japanese run She's not fully recouped the 9 points that will come off week after Miami, so Gabi will fall back into the 280s then. Still a long way back for her. So far reaching one final has replaced winning 4 titles and reaching one final in the early part of last season. So she is some 200 points light of where she was this time last year... It's not clear when she will reappear, but let's hope for a little more of last week's promise.
Hmm, it did seem a long match and longer than your typical 3 & 4 defeat, but she hasn't really built on last week's promising showing. I was thinking at the time, just scraping past the lowly ranked, veteran Thai player was slightly concerning, but that a win was a win and at least she got over the line. I wonder where she ends up next?
Interesting that 3 qualifiers have made the last 8.

Gabi has never played in April since she started playing regularly on the senior tour, so I expect she won't appear again until the end of April. I expect her preference would be Gifu.

In the final here Stephanie Wagner, the qualifier who beat Gabi in the R16 lost in three sets to Hua-Chen Lee, a Taipei player who is only WR 511 but got in via her IR ranking, where she is #2. This win more than doubles her points and will give her ranking a massive boost to around 380. #missed opportunities
