Oh, please!  cry  Neither!    These pointless attempts at "portmanteau" nicknames for doubles partnerships are childish in the extreme! no

I like them and think they're good fun, as well a less typing.

I like them too!   I like portmanteau words in general.  We have to thank Lewis Carol (Alice in Wonderland)  for coining the term "portmanteau" for words made up of two words condensed into one. A portmanteau is a case or briefcase that has two equal parts.  Portmanteaus are more common than one mighht imagine.  Given the choice between calling a data transmission device a "Modulator/Demodulator" or a "Modem"  what is the average person going to do?

Sorry for being off topic!

Interesting.....

(Wonder is any purists will jump down your neck and insist on portmanteaux?)

Have just gone and looked these up and found 'podcast' and 'smog' and 'motel' and 'brunch' and lots of others so, yes, way more common than we'd thought (especially given I'd never thought about it whatsoever up till now smile)

For the players, it's a question of personal preference but I think it's a fun game to play. It's a 'wordy' game, well suited to a written forum. Some work really well and stick ('Taco' is perfect, even though there's not any Mexican connection, it just hits the spot somehow), some are a good effort but don't pass the test of time and some are daft but well done for trying. (Just my vote, but I rather like Skupray - sounds like something out of Thunderbirds)

However, Jamie and Neal works fine too, on a prosaic level smile

I always like it when Ken and Neal play together. I call them the Skupskis. Not sure it will catch on...

Furniture was scarce, so the model stand was used as a table, and the guests were to sit on portmanteaux if they liked, and if they didn't on the floor.

Somerset Maugham, Of human bondage, Chapter 47

Something tells me, however, that, used in the sense being discussed here, it takes an "s" in the plural... wink

Some of the pairing of names are OK but some are a bit of a stretch.

I have come up with this one for Ken and Neal : Skup-ski. What do you think ?  wink

I guess it is much easier for me not to put my foot in it if I take the trouble to read the thread before posting. no
