that is not a good result for Jamie and bruno, although Jamie has had a month off effectively since AO I think. Still , disappointing start to spring hardcourt swing
Come the end of the year or whenever the whatever it is that is now called the Davis Cup happens, it's already clear that Joe Salisbury rather than Dom Inglot is likely to be there... But unless Jamie picks up (which is still what would be expected), then it's possible that Luke Bambridge and Jonny O'Mara might hove into the picture too (or Neal Skupski too).
The issue beyond just wins and rankings is that doubles players have partners of varying abilities and then in Davis Cup, unless like Luke & Johnny already a partnership, they have to pair up with a much less familiar partner and some pairs gel better than others.
Let's hope that any hard thinking Leon has to do will be the result of much continued GB doubles success.
Yes, it is quite possible post this week that Joe and Luke/Jonny will pass Jamie in the Race standings and although embryonic, that makes it very interesting. the real season starts soon though as the points right now have a large bias towards Australian Open results; once we add in IW and Miami over March and then into Monte Carlo soon after, we will get a real feel as to where we stand - the season by then will be 1/4 over, events wise.
I don't think, however, Luke and Jonny will yet get into IW and Miami draws and so may need to keep on winning at ATP 250 level, it may be that is the thinking in terms of current clay event in Brazil - no chance of IW and Miami so get some clay practice in, then hit Europe hard around the ATP250/500 events and gather points that way.
McDonald beat Del Potro in the Delray Beach QF last week before losing to Evo's final conqueror Albot in the SF. Here he beat (6) Tiafoe in 3 sets in the L16.
Interesting to see two elite college players battling it out in the QF of a 500. With the likes of Axel Geller and Brandon Holte (and Paul Jubb!!) in College and the ITF reforms perhaps we are the beginning to see the pathway to the ATP tour for all other than teenage phenomens to the ATP tour evolve.
