The premier under 12 tournament in Auray, France is also on this week. Our six members of the bronze medal winning TE Winter Cup teams are all taking part. Three of them have reached the quarters - Samy Khediri, Benjamin Gusic Wan and Hephzibah Oluwadare A lot of matches are streamed live and available afterwards on their YouTube channel   Hephzibah and Samy are second and third on court 1 tomorrow

Thanks for highlighting that, David. Had forgotten that was on this week.

Went and looked at 5 mins of Benjamin Gusic Wan's previous matches. And Oliver Bonding, as he's on there too.
Ben's a little lad but hits through the ball and uses the angles well, especially on his backhand.
Will try and see some of little fave Hep today and catch Samy whom I've never seen before.

Well, it's GB 2, Roumania 0 this morning in Auray for the U12s.

Both lads won their matches pretty easily. The ungracious would say that Ben Gusic Wan moonballed his opponent to death but actually he was a bit cleverer than that, continued to use his angles well, get lots of whip on his backhand from time to time. And there's a lot of moonballing in junior tennis, his opponent was doing it too, and the lad is not big, it's a reasonable part of the game.
Samy also played a pretty conservative, try-to-make-no faults, first set, which worked well, and then - feeling more confident - really changed and became more aggressive, which you can tell he likes, and suits him, but he's probably been told to rein it in a bit.

Good show from both of them.

And a joy to watch young Hephzibah against a very determined young Russian miss who started poorly and then really got herself going

I don't know how Hep will be at age 18 but she is remarkably strong girl for her age, and doesn't half power that ball. Real intent, it's great to see. Very promising. A real little fave.

(Mind you, even she doesn't absolutely cream the ball like Shanice Roignot (FRA) does, who won very easily on the other court, and has a very impressive game but problems with growth at the moment).

Hephzibah has just started her semi on the Auray live stream followed by the two boys. Mingge Xu is in the consolation final, which is currently being streamed (3-3 at present)

Mingge has just won the consolation final - if you're going to lose early on, lose in R1 and then go and win the consolation draw - it's a good strategy

She deserved the win - a bit more penetration on her shots, a technically better serve, less UEs - but the other girl made it hard for her in the second set.

Well done.

Hephzibah ended up losing her semi, 6-3 4-6 6-3

It was a pretty close match, against a Japanese girl (also quite tall and strong) who was just a little bit more dynamic than Hep, who is a good athlete and covers the court well but doesn't do her microfootwork as she should, relying on upper body strength to compensate, and so makes faults, and also has slight strategy problems, making wrong choices at times (which is not surprising in a 12 year-old ). The Japanese girl played very well though, went for her shots.
Overall, a good match. She shouldn't be too disappointed with her run this week.

At the U12 in Auray, Khederi lost pretty fairly to a little scrap from France called Yosh Sborowsky, with a single-handed backhand (very rare at that age).
It was 6-4 7-5, and Khediri played OK, but the match was pretty much on the French kid's racket.
