It's closer at Bet365. They have Jay a slight 4/6 favourite and Jan 11/10. Looks like it's 9.30am UK, so an earlier one.

Very close, 4-4.....

Jan complaining about the line calls - actually he's been very calm, there's been two that seemed wrong (to me), that he sort of let go, and now a third where he's finally demanded to what's going on.

(NB For what it matters, which is not at all, but his English is perfect).

Excellent game by both players at 4-4. Jay saved 2 BPs with some super play. But served 2 DFs. Jan played very well. But Jay ends up winning it, 5-4*

Very interesting match this. Big match for both - Jan will be desperate to crack the top 240/250 (again) in time for the Wimbledon cut off as that will likely help with his Wimbledon MDWC chances, whereas you'd think Jay would probably get one (MDWC) even if he slipped out of the qualifying placed because of his age, tennis upbringing and doing well last year at the tournament.

I've never heard Jan talk and there's been no videos / press of his switch, so I don't know his UK feelings, intentions or reasons, but my only slight concern is (and this is mainly if it goes very well for him) he uses what he can to push on and maybe crack the top 100 and then switches back as he has got what he wanted - there's also less Davis Cup matches these days where you could 'tie him down' in the odd dead rubber.

No, I'd never heard him talk before either which was why I mentioned, in passing, that his English is spot on. I could barely pick the man out of a line-up, to be honest.

I think it's very unlikely he would switch back though. I don't see why he would. I don't think the German federation rate him that highly so he may well be pretty miffed at them anyway. He grew up in Germany but his dad's Polish and his mum's English so he's got a mixed background whatever.

Yeah, the Polish dad might make the switching back less likely. It was just because I literally don't know anything about his background other than a Southampton born mother - AFAIK his mother could have been born here to foreign parents and moved to Germany when she was 3 or 4, but Jan still has that minor GB connection from his mothers birthplace. I've mentioned her a few times on here in recent months, but going by social media, someone like Georgia Brescia is clearly proud of her English roots, she has stories and photos from ages ago with 'home' when back in Liverpool, 'always sad to leave' and a lot of her family are still based in England, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see her switching at some point in the future if she feels it would help her career, but knowing more about Jan would help.

It's strange, during Wimbledon, there'll be tennis fans who follow the ATP/WTA a bit, not massively, but more than your fair weather 2 week Wimbledon fan, who won't have a clue who he is if he does get a MDWC.

Edit - fans not players
