Fed Cup 2019 World Group II Play-Off - Great Britain vs Kazakhstan- 20-21 April

Not a fan of Jeremy Bates sitting down by the baseline away from the team to give Katie his own coaching.

Fed Cup you don't have your coach with you, that's the point. And it undermines Anne and the others.

Plus he just gets what he gets all his players to do when they build a lead: "make them play". And then they tap the ball about or balloon a soft ball long every return

Why was there no doubles today? I thought at Bath there was doubles both days even though dead rubbers.

Different format now. Those Bath ties were just over one day - 2 singles matches and a doubles. Here it's basically like the old Davis Cup, 4 singles and 1 doubles, but over 2 days not 3.

At Bath each match was 3 rubbers only ( 2 singles and 1 doubles ) and was played on one day only. Doubles was played because final positions could be decided by 'rubber difference' In the ko stage (as this weekend) matches comprise 5 rubbers. Dubs are meant to be played even if the overall result has been decided.

Thought Katie B had moved on from Bates a little while ago for general coaching. Like before her significant rise last year. What's her coaching arrangement these days?

And that sounds awful as a match day arrangement. What happened at the sit downs - did she go to him or was it less direct coaching?

I fully understand, but she's going to have a lot of trouble finding anywhere open before 12 on Easter Sunday !

Oh less direct. She would be looking to him rather than the bench after points for reassurance etc ..

I just thought it was off.

Ain't that the truth.

I've stood behind him twice, in matches that started very well, when all he's done is frowned and humphed and tutted whenever the girl's made a mistake, with the result that she makes more and more, and then he tells her cut out the mistakes and get the ball in the court, so all she does is play ultra safe - and both times the girl has blown a very winnable match. And just due to utterly awful coaching. Maybe he's better in training, not sure, but he's the world worst as a courtside coach.

Katie Boulter's mother seems very close with Jeremy - I don't mean that to sound untoward, I just mean that she seems to hang on his every word, and looks up to him, rather puppy dog like, even when he's talking nonsense; maybe she is of the era where she was led to believe that Jeremy walked on water. Not sure, but it seems connected.

If anyone at the LTA was paying attention, they'd well know that Putintseva has an excellent record in FC on Hard Indoor courts, 9-2 (now 10-2).
They'd also realise she's 0-5 on hard OUTDOOR courts, and that as she plays every tie, they's schedule accordingly.

And, which genius chose Rafa's preferred, treacly, indoor surface as the final rush of manure to the head?

Jo can beat Putintseva, and Boulter still beat Diyas - perfectly possible to see those results go our way.
Unfortunately pretty much exactly equally possible to see them going the other way, too.

Re Putintseva and  her hard indoor court record the fact is that Katie should have won the match.  Also re the venue you can't bring in drinks or food or take drinks out but it is perfectly acceptable to bring in drums, trombones and trumpets!  Re Jeremy  Bates to me he is an ex player and not a coach in the true sense of the word. He couldn't help Katie win her matcb points

I got the same impression when he was watching Emily Appleton at Chiswick last year. I'm sure she was very concious of his presence, and her game deteriorated during the match.

If you read Judy's book I think she brought Jeremy Bates into the coaching set up at some stage. He also coached  Annie  K  during  her career.
