If it were me, I'd give MD WCs to Maia, Fran, Jodie and Emma, and Q WCs to Beth, Freya, Laura (if she's fit) and probably Emily A. It might sound harsh, but given how long it is since either Katy or Naomi won a match I really don't see how you could justify giving them wild cards. They need to prove themselves with some wins in qualifying and I really hope they do.
I'd agree with those personally.
Yes, those would be very much in line with what I meant about the training group (with Maia being the outsider, based on other factors).
However, is there a limit on how many wildcards a woman can have? I believe it's 6 in WTA events - but in ITF? Do they cross?
If so, then the really 'in' players might want to keep them for richer events?????
Separate quotas for WTA, ITF 25-100 and ITF15s, each being 6 of which no more than 3 main draw Emma is age restricted to 4 WCs across all WTA and ITF 25 - 100s until her 17th birthday
Thanks for this input chaps. I must confess I had only looked at this event in isolation and hadn't considered the question of quotas, nor the implications for the grass court season etc. I still think Maia would be keen to have a crack in the main draw, given her excellent performance at the recent 25K here, and I'd love to see Laura back playing again.
Main draw wildcards are an issue and some will hold back on the hope of getting some for the grass season.
It used to be 3, but if it is now 6 then it is less of an issue.
60K Shrewsbury
25k Glasgow
25k Bolton
25k Sunderland
100k Surbiton
100k Manchester (competing with WTA Nottingham)
100k Ilkley (competing with WTA Birmingham)
Wimbledon Q's - how does this work? Will this count as an ITF QWC, or are Grand Slam's separate? WTA Eastbourne here as well, but no ITF Southsea this year
Wimbledon - ITF MD and QWC I assume?
Those are confirmed events, not sure what the plan is after that, there were 4 more 25k's after Wimbledon last year - Chiswick, Woking, Wirral and Shrewsbury. You'd imagine Shrewsbury would be dropped if it has one earlier in the year. Loughborough had a 25k last year in the place of the upcoming 60k so maybe that could happen where 25k Shrewsbury was?
Obviously lots of variables, like who will get the Wimbledon MDWCs, respective rankings at time of ITF cut offs, who wants to play where in the summer etc.
You'd think Katy and Naomi wouldn't need WCs for Bolton and Sunderland (if they wanted to play) whereas the likes of Maia, Fran, Freya, Jodie probably would, so that needs to be considered.
Bonaventure withdraws, would have been a seed, possibly a top seed depending on how well she does this week in Russia. Guess that's good news for Harriet, Heather and Katie B who she beat a couple of days ago. Paquet into main draw, Maia one off getting into qualifying outright.
Not earth-shattering news but Dodin has withdrawn which means Maia is officially in qualifying, although I'd be shocked if none of KD, NB or ML got a WC so probably academic anyway.
Feel a bit sorry for Dodin, she seems to be so injury prone. She's played once since Wimbledon and that was a retirement in the first round of an ITF event in France. She's outside the top 300 now and even the early part of 2018 was stop-start.
A few more posts in the entries and rankings page, but looks like Harriet has pulled out of Shrewsbury. Not sure why she has, but I'll re-post what I put on the other thread:
Unless she's got a MDWC for Doha or something if she's not injured? Dubai and Doha obviously don't have many home players and last year Dubai gave Eden a random QWC.
Big shame for the tournament and seemed like a good choice for her. Not in the top 100, so 60k would be a good level for her to get some wins and improve the ranking, especially being a seed and at home. We finally get an ITF away from the grass season above 25k and it looks like 2 of the 5 who they would have been designed for won't be playing.
If it is injury related then I obviously wish her well.
Frech has pulled out as well, so a few of the initial seeds are no longer. I guess a weaker event will give more opportunities for some of our MDWCs to get a win or two.
Whilst it is probably great that the players have flexibility around scheduling, if I was looking to purchase tickets I would be very cross at the field changing constantly. What are the rules around this?
I am going to the Ilkley Challenger in June and have finals tickets. But I had thought of going earlier in the week also and it would disturb me a lot if many of the marquee initial entries that had attracted me then pulled out
I wouldn't worry too much about some billed players not turning up. Ilkley is such a great event that you get to see up and coming players you wouldn't otherwise have gone to watch. Saw Yastremska there last year, also Harriet. Men's doubles usually has a good field too, always enjoyable.
