I really don't think any tournament format would have have coped with the weather in Antalya last week. The airport was hit by a tornado on Saturday, pushing planes aside and overturning buses. It left several injured and 2 planes and a police helicopter severely damaged. It was the fifth tornado in the area in 3 days with the governor warning of more tornadoes, strong winds, flooding and lighting to come. This is all part of a "medicane" storm system that has formed in the Mediterranean this week, and that is the explanation for the strong winds and suspension of play in Mallorca in the middle of the week.

Yes, the new system has obvious timing issues. Also many tournaments are asking many qualifiers to play 2 matches on the Monday, so those qualifying are starting the MD tired. I'll be interested to see whether there is any increase in injury retirements with this new format too.

double q matches make sense for the atp/itf cull as it puts low players at a disadvantage and make it harder to progress for the non junior pathway players
make them play double and then md matches all on the bounce if they q and they less lekely to progress which mena that junior exempts will be the strong path forward and a lot of players will drop out - not just because of this but it a brick in the wall
all helping to reduce the number of pros and people trying to be pros or playing tennis in general and keep it down which is how atp stated they want it and when/if the gimmelstob group completes its takeover then its going to go even furtherer
players/fans have to get out of the old habit of presuming the atp are doing things for the good of the overall game that no longer true and they said as much these things are MEANT to hurt tennis once you except that it much easier to understand

Fran has called it a day here following the prolonged rain. She has withdrawn from week 5 and is not in the MD.
