Weeks 3 & 4 - Australian Open - men's singles main draw (hard)

After three hours & 34 minutes Andy takes the match against Bautista into a fifth & final set (4-6 4-6 7-6(5) 7-6(4))!    How in God's name has he managed it?  That's the measure of the man I guess!    Some swan song!

Immense. 2 sets all!

I am supposed to be writing a legal document here for litigation and it is all over the place!

3 hours 32 minutes as well! Longest match on day 1. This will be 4 hours plus at the end. Encapsulates Murray in one match. Shame on AO for not putting him on main court tonight!

All my plans for the morning were shelved. However, I absolutely have to go out at 12.15. Hope you're listening, Andy.

I am truly enjoying watching this - have moved to a bigger screen than my phone. Really what a treat Andy is giving us.

Massive point that will decide this match was 0-30 on RBA serve there at 1-0 Murray in 5th, Andy should have made it 0-40.

Not probable but you never know.....

Looking like a good shout right now.  But I wouldn't put it past a certain Mr Murray to summon up one last super human effort and make it past Bautista Agut.

So whose prediction is going to turn out right ?  CD is favourite at the moment with Muzza a break down in the 5th but I am still holding out hope.

Well it looks like I got the "super human" effort part right but in the end it wasn't quite enough.

Sir Andy Murray - I take my hat off to you on what has been memorable career.

Murray is a warrior. If this is to be it, I'm glad it could end in such a typical spirited Murray-esque fightback even despite ultimately going down in five.

What happened to Edmund and what does this mean for his ranking? Was it a case of Berdych back to his best, Edmund completely off the boil or a combination of? 720 points is a hell of a lot to lose at his rank. Disappointing to see Norrie lose to a player he beat last week but do wonder if his efforts last week may have seen him a bit tired, he's barely had a chance to recover. Bit unfair sticking him out on day 1 (can't remember if AO have three days for first round or two, if it's the latter then understandable I guess). Great to see Dan winning.

Didn't see any of Kyle's match but Berdych has been coming back after 6 months out through injury and by all accounts has had a really strong start to the year.  Kyle on the other hand is playing only his 2nd match.  He lost the first match and then withdrew the following week with a knee injury.  He is down to 25 in the live rankings but is likely to drop a few more places over the course of the next couple of weeks.

However, he has ZERO points to defend until April.  So there is a good chance to move himself back up somewhat and hopefully he will have a good clay court season on what is his favourite surface.

Murray didnt say this was his last AusOpen there, something very weird about that interview. Might explain why he didnt get as emotional, possibly a rethink who knows. He looked tense at the tributes, I really think he regrets that press conference now. Hes barely match fit yet he lasts 5 sets over 4 hrs against a top 20 player. Its got to be food for thought. Story not over yet it seems.
