Weeks 3 & 4 - Australian Open - men's singles main draw (hard)

So pleased for Tiafoe. Not only his story, but he seems a really nice guy when I've seen him play in the UK. And always so much more potential than the Noah Rubin, Koslov, Tommy Paul etc lot where many people had him a couple of years back.
A Greek friend of mine is friends with Tsitsipas too - refreshing to see a different style of play - he's really taking it to Roger....

As well as Tsitsipas taking it to Fed and Tiafoe winning, great to see RBA into a first(!) slam QF.

And how well young Popyrin played - never seen him before - Australia continuing to do really well with their youngsters.
Although seemingly he actually did most of his tennis growing up in Spain, having realised he had to learn on clay to really move his game forward. Also spent three years in Dubai, and based in France after Spain. So very little Australia there in his tennis growth. But still....

So Bautista (22) takes out Cilic (6) in five, the Greek leads Roger the Lodger by 6-7(11) 7-6(3) 7-5 & Ash Barty does for Shriekapova in three!

And a mention in despatches for young Harry Wendelken, who saw off the Romanian junior 10th seed in three & Jacob Fearnley, who dumped out the Yank 12th seed, also in three!

Yes. Love Fed. But saw Stef play a cracker 5 set match in the wimbly qualis (my Greek friend had ordered me to go and support him !) - he won 7-5 in the fifth. Just loved his attitude. And his tennis....

Good to see the new guard starting to make breakthroughs in the GS

Would be nice to see Zverev finally make a decent run in a slam.

Drama in the Busta v Nishikori match. With over 5 hours on the clock and deep into the 5th set MTB, the umpire makes a debatable call. Busta is 8-5 up, his shot is called out which is overruled by the umpire. Nishikori hits a "winner". Busta argues that the call came before Nishikori hits the ball and that the point should be replayed. The umpire disagrees and gives Nishikori the point. Busta fails to win another point and loses 10-8. He then storms off court shouting at the umpire.

Make up your own minds as to who was right.

I should add that is is being reported that Busta later apologised for his outburst.

Well clearly the umpire was wrong. I think it's a rare case of if he had called the supervisor he may have got the call overturned.

Having watched that, i can't see how that point hasn't been replayed, clearly before the winner, although Busta would have been no where near it.
Love Nishikori though and very pleased for him
