Pleased for young Brandon, who beats Isaac, 6-2 4-6 6-0

Brandon's case is a slightly particular one and he deserves a lot of support.

Sometimes I wonder about Liam. Big sis has posted videos of her giving him the run around in practice.

Why isnt Brandon going to College in the US? Does anyone know if he has explored that route? It appears to be serving Paul Jubb very well still 19 yet his game is constantly being tested and developed with high quality coaching, now he would be genuinely competitive in 25Ks and realistically once he has completed his senior year in 18 months Challenger ready. Connor Thompson  who has played quite a lot at tournaments with Brandon last year will be joined Paul this year at South Carolina and I wouldnt not be suprised to see him make a similar impression/feature next year. The Game****s seem to try and get players over and playing in the squad ASAP.

I don't know about his academics but I believe that financial constraints are probably a major factor. I know people can get full scholarships but even airfares etc. need paying.

Paul, I believe, was very fortunate to have Nuffield Heath and Yorkshire LTA get behind him. And kudos to them. But I don't think Brandon has that sort of support.

Celebration day in the Broady household as, following on from Naomi, Liam wins too, with Finn unfortunately having to retire.

PS I received a cracking report of yesterday's match between Liam and Brandon - seems like it was an excellent match, Brandon played out of his skin, had a MP, Liam saved it really well, the third set was close, even though Brandon had a slight groin strain, but the youngster couldn't quite hold his body together at the end, and Liam's experience told. Hope the spectators enjoyed it !

What is the point in these events where all the Pros get in and take all the money. ATP and WTA ranked shoulld not be allowed to enter. Give someone else a chance.

This wasn't the normal entry list - it isn't usual for so many tour pros to compete.
But it does happen occasionally at the premier tier events.

The point here is that Liam Broady  for example would see it as relatively easy money (£1500 for the winner) which despite a tough semi has proved to be the case, even £850 for the runner up would have been a reasonable week especially when considering he can't string two wins together at the moment on the challenger tour.

However I totally agree with your point, ATP ranked players should be looking to forward their careers and not going back to where they were playing at 15 or 16.  I am going to single out Liam because he needs to get a grip on himself, tough it out at ITF or Challenger level where the competition is stronger or quite frankly pack it in.  I see him as someone who has peaked in his career, sadly drifting towards the end and is effectively taking the money off teenage players most of who won't be receiving funding, which is my main gripe for the likes of Broady and Jon Gray entering.

There is no argument that this is a backward move for these guys and I too believe that an ATP ranked player should be barred from entering.

There were several seasoned pro's at this event who sadly will never make a penny from the game, I admire them for there efforts though.

I sincerely hope I am wrong about Liam be the way.

I think that Naomi and Liam both played Bolton because it was very close to home.

It may well be that they have connections there, the club may well have helped them out when they were kids, given them free court time, coaching, or whatever, and they feel they want to pay back (or were even asked to pay back) by boosting the prestige of the event.

Also, because the event has marketed itself as run-up to the 25k next week, it makes a lot of sense for them to play here (assuming they're both playing the 25k, which they are, and which - again - they may well be doing partly out of affinity to Bolton TC).

And it helps Bolton advertise its events (both of them) because it makes it a tennis fortnight, not just one week, so more special sessions, events, razzmatazz things can be planned and newspapers might get more into it etc. etc.

I think the Premier event was thrilled to have the Broadys and more power to their elbow - far better for British tennis than off in some foreign clime, playing some anonymous event, and then flying back at the last minute for the 25k (or not at all).

I take both points and understands Marks frustrations, the developing players should reap the rewards for playing on the British tour otherwise it is a road to nowhere. Similarly I get why, and applaud Naomi and Liam for supporting the Bolton events by playing .... it says more about pro tennis in the U.K. that they have to take the prize money than them ..... dammed if you do dammed if you dont.

All very fair points CD. I'll stand by all points above though. Same applies to Gray & Johnson etc. Get ranking points on the board and leave these events for the youngsters.

In other sports, playing down like that to support a home event, pro players would donate the money back... However the Broady's can't afford to, which also says a lot about the relatively small number who earn much from playing pro tennis.
