It seems that Hong Kong isn't quite so popular after all - plenty of withdrawals before tomorrow's deadline means that Tara is close to getting in. Now up to 5th on the main alt list, and 9th on the ITF reserved alt list.

Edited - Kyle is playing all 3 pre-AO tournaments according to this tweet

Although as the first reply tweet points out there only are 2 weeks between the season start and the Aussie Open.
Some other exhibition event prior to Week 1 ?
I thought the same but there is no evidence of him playing in mubudala event, kooyong or the hawaii event that week, and cam is playing Hopman Cup. Those are the exhibition events I can find pre AO. There's also a Japanese event but it's closed tk Asian players only. There may be others, but I'm not aware of them.
Tara has made it in to qualifying at Hong Kong, but with 2 late withdrawals from the ITF list, she's 2 places away from the MD (assuming those late withdrawals are replaced with the ITF alternates).
edit: The freeze has passed and the late withdrawals were replaced by the next 2 on the list as expected
