Good luck to both tomorrow. Potentially the top seed for Emilie and the second seed for Alice in the SFs, should they get that far.
QF: (4) Emilie Lindh WR 1017 vs (6) Madison WESTBY (USA) 1066 (CH:1049 Nov 18)
QF: (8) Alice Gillan WR 1113 vs (3) Anastasia SHAULSKAYA (RUS) 853 (CH:844 Jan 15)
Emilie a break up at 5-3*
Slow start by Alice, quickly going 0-4 and only winning 3 points. But she has weathered the storm, and has got it back to *3-4.
This one of the three Ekaterina Makarovas is at her CH. A tough challenge probably for Emilie but nevertheless a good test for her.
On Katharina Hering, I saw I jumped the gun on her, I thought she'd already won her match, but in fact she was down in the third set, though she then pulled it back and won the TB easily. Still, hope for Alice.
SF: (4) Emilie Lindh WR 1017 vs (1) Ekaterina MAKAROVA (RUS) 659=CH
SF: (8) Alice Gillan WR 1113 vs (2) Katharina HERING (GER) 869 (CH:672 Oct 16)
Hering may be second seed but she's not been having a great time down in South Africa.
Lost in the QFs to a player ranked approx 900 last week.
Lost in R2 the week before
Makarova, on the other hand, won the title both weeks so you're best hope with her is that she may just possibly be a bit tired/bored
Great to see the two British players doing so well.
Great to watch 30 mins of livestream of both girls on two screens - thank you, Stellenbosch.
As expected, Hering was not too impressive, although that's maybe coz Alice had taken the stuffing out of her in the first set.
And Alice, as ever, has an interesting game, I still like it, just a touch of Marion Bartoli about her on the backhand and a lot of control on her forehand, it does what she wants it to, causes problems.
Never seen Emilie before and enjoyed it - she really distributes the ball well, has intent on the ball. Well taught. But Makarova was a wall in that third set.
SF: (4) Emilie Lindh WR 1017 lost to (1) Ekaterina MAKAROVA (RUS) 659 6-3 2-6 6-1
SF: (8) Alice Gillan WR 1113 def. (2) Katharina HERING (GER) 869 (CH:672 Oct 16) 7-6(3) 6-0
Thanks CD, those comments are both are interesting. I'm engaged in intensive work travel at the moment with minimal internet during the day, so no time to watch but good to hear about both. Emilie drew the short straw today, but that performance sounds not bad considering that no-one has taken more than 3 games off Makarova so far this week, never mind a whole set... And Alice seems to have come on leaps and bounds the last two weeks, maybe through gaining confidence last week. Her 2nd final in two weeks will give her a real ranking boost, whatever the outcome tomorrow. Both may be a bit sad this is the end of the Stellenbosch tournaments now!
