With Jay and Wardy in the main draw (I assume) let's hope that this tournament is more successful than this week's one which was a damp squib, minus Wardy getting a R1 win.
QR1: (q2) Liam Broady WR 317 (CH = 154 in April) lost to Ben Patael (ISR) WR 609 (CH = 499 in May last year) by 6-3 6-3
Not good. Just hope 2019 brings another upturn for the Broadys. Certainly Liam does go quite sharply up and down the rankings.
A couple of months or so ago he was suggesting that he was back on track after feeling he had lost something by trying to change his game for clay. But he has rather lost his way again.

Amazed Jay is only 1 place behind his career high. Should be am incentive to have a good week this week and try and push slightly higher.
Yes, he has essentially held his 170s ranking position ( first achieved after his Binghamton title at the end of July ) because August to October last year like this was relatively quiet for him.
But he now has 15 points coming off on Monday and 60 Bangalore RU points coming off a week on Monday.
So he will no doubt have to win the title here ( 80 points ) to have any chance of improving on his current ranking in the short term and will fall out of the top 200 with a fairly early exit.
Indeed, his current 239 guaranteed ranking points ( with these points off and no additions ) is equivalent to WR 231/232 on the current rankings list. So probably good enough for Aussie Open qualifying but maybe not by very much.
So this would certainly be a good week to rediscover more form.

We often see a year of consolidation (points wise) which, when there is a step up in grade (particularly given Jay was still in his teens for the first 8 months of it) indicates significant progress.
He has had to play higher ranked players to score the equivalent points. Hopefully he will now feel he belongs on the Challenger tour and chalk up a few wins with aspirations to play more 250's with a view to be playing an ATP only schedule in 2020.
Jay Nov 16-17 played 16 futures events, 6 challengers and Wimbledon.
The year Nov 17-18 3 futures, 20 Challengers, an ATP 250, 500, Wimbledon (WC) Qualified for AO, French, and US Open
