RE: ATP World Tour Finals - doubles

In the other match in this group today, Cabal & Farah saw off Mektic & Peya by 3 & 4.

And Federer lost to nishikori in straight sets just now. Looked very out of sorts

I was watching tonight and realised I didn't actually care that much. A very passing interest. The venue location is up for grabs from 2020 and I wouldn't be that bothered if London lost it. If they did, and I understand Tokyo are strong contenders, shanghai also and maybe Paris, then I wonder if London may get the sop of Queens being made into a masters 1000 with a 56 player draw, which I'd love, or if Paris got it, might they lose Paris masters and effectively swap with London. Or ditto if say Tokyo or shanghai got it.

Probably about time for a change for this event

If it goes to Asia then the European swing doesn't make much sense and would have the same issues as the WTA in that regard. I think the players like it in London because of the location.

The Paris Masters though...not a fan of it.

Apparently surface playing very fast this week. Not sure of they've changed it? I recall a few years back it being frustratingly slow?

Hi Jaffa, thanks for that - yes, I had seen that before but some time ago , interesting reading. Supports view that London is fast and indeed has sped up over the years. Shanghai also is quick and those two seem to top the ratings on speed.

That said, the results this week incl Djoko beating Isner, Federer losing to Nishikori, and Cilic getting beaten by Zverev so it shows it isnt all about court speed.

Klaasen & Venus beat Mektic & Peya in the match between the two first day losers.

So if James & Bruno beat Cabal & Farah they will already be through to the SF since only one other pair will be able to reach 2 wins.

With the money and ranking points for each win they will still want to win every match they can though.

I noticed that the NY Times ran an article on best tennis strokes around in the game. Jamie was included for best doubles volleys. Andy had a couple of inclusions also and Kyle.

The survey covered a wide number of experts

www.nytimes.com/2018/10/18/sports/tennis/who-has-the-best-shots-in-womens-tennis.html

The womens analysis didnt include any Brits

rather stunningly, Anderson beat Nishikori for the loss of one game. He must almost be in the semis now. He will play Federer next. Two things - If I had paid £60 to watch todays matches, 6-0 6-1 wouldnt best please me and secondly, Anderson seems to be on fire so far based on scorelines, 4 sets to 0

Yes, I'd be rather disappointed not to get more action and a much closer match.

But if they were both giving their best and the one very much better on the day, then that's just proper sport, you don't know what you are going to get. I'd accept that much more than any feeling of stage managed closeness.

Re Anderson, yes for me he's definitely through. Nishikori and Fed could yet also get to 2 wins, and among the 3 of them they could all be 2-2 in sets but Anderson would easily beat Nishikori on games % to be one of the two through. Fed needs to win tonight to stay in the mix or it would be Nishikori vs Thiem for the other SF spot.

Nice half volley lob from Jamie to enable Jamie/Bruno to break and take the first set 6-4 against Cabal/Farah
