I'm not too surprised. It was certainly winnable (being a seed) but the Russian was actually the favourite and has been in better form this past month. Katy hasn't really been having top 250 results recently.
If that is the end of her season hopefully she can pick herself up and get going again wherever she chooses to play, but AO quals look over for her now.
R1: COLLINS, Ali (GBR) WC UNR lost to RUS, Arantxa (NED) 1 109 3-6 4-6 - pretty decent scoreline in fact against top seed
R1: LUMSDEN, Maia (GBR) Q 376 def GUERRO ALVAREZ, Eva (ESP) 332 6-4 7-5 - decent win against similar level player
R1: SILVA, Eden (GBR) Q 459 lost to OZGEN, Pemra (TUR) 8 240 0-6 0-6 - disastrous!!
R1: STAFF, Holly (GBR) WC UNR lost to KORDOLAIMI, Eleni (GRE) Q 449 2-6 2-6 - probably not too bad given she is unranked
R1: DUNNE, Katy (GBR) WC 7 237 lost to SAVINYKH, Valeria (RUS) 377 2-6 3-6 - v poor and disappointing, almost disastrous
R1: CHRISTIE, Freya (GBR) Q 516 lost to SHINIKOVA, Isabella (BUL) 275 4-6 4-6 - not too terrible given the ranking disparity
R1: GREY, Sarah Beth (GBR) WC 439 lost to ANDREI, Laura-Ioana (ROU) Q 453 2-6 4-6 - disappointing
R1: TAYLOR, Gabriella (GBR) 2 164 lost to VRLJIC, Ana (CRO) Q 562 6-7(3) 1-6 - disastrous!!
1 win, 3 oks, 4 disappointing getting on for disastrous! I would give it a C minus overall (or on the new GCSE scale given this is ITF $25k level , it probably would rate a 4 out of 9!
Indi:'However, as Tom indicated, Tennpar has picked up wrongly on the angle that Tom and some others like myself have been coming from. It is most certainly not the players we are getting at but the culture, the system, the infrastructure and the ever changing plans etc that we are on about here and have been at other times. It's the system and support to enable us to have more numbers in say the 2000 to 2002 girls group'
Sorry, haven't got the hang of the quotes bit..
Indi/Tom - I was being somewhat tongue in cheek with 'mediocre and feckless'. A phrase much more likely to be used by the LTA I feel, than those mainly very supportive posters on this forum of all GB players (unless doubles is the topic ).
I can see how my opening line could however be interpreted in another way. Apologies - no offence intended and thank you all for your support and good wishes.
Not really surprised by those singles results, I did say they were tough.
Gabi and Katy just back from a long trip and moving from outdoor to in seems to be too soon.
I see Freya lost in the doubles after winning last week.

I'd still maintain the field is tough rather than really the draw was particularly tough given the field. The draw looked decent and 7 matches shouldn't have been getting lost, let alone in straight sets, not threatening a 3rd set. It was a bad day.
Though yes Gabi and Katy did have to adapt from Australia. I don't know when they travelled back as to whether jet lag might have been any part. Maybe questionable them even taking part but Katy in particular maybe felt she needed points and Gabi maybe some more wins and confidence.

I believe Gabi travelled back Thursday last week, and Katy Friday. It was probably far more the change to indoor hard courts from outdoor hard that made the difference. Not certain of the speed of the courts, but I would expect them to be quicker this week.
Yeah, in terms of the odds, after Gabi's drifted, all 7 who lost went into their matches as the betting underdog and Maia was the only favourite, so not a huge surprise in that sense. However, I don't think it's unreasonable at all to hope or even expect one of Gabi, Katy, Eden, Beth or Freya to get one win between them and we end up with at least 2 in the 2nd round. Very disappointing day, although it was helped by overseas results.
